If you're into operas with an R.Kelly spin (and who isn't?), outdoor movies, or runway stunting, Chicago is the place to be this weekend. The city's hosting the The Magnificent Mile Shopping Festival, Maroon 5 and a collection of summer street festivals. Get loose, it's time to make weekend plans.
Between 2005 and 2012, R. Kelly released an anthology of music videos under the "Trapped in the Closet" umbrella, a hip hopera that told the most prosperously awesome story of all time. Basically, Kells has a one night stand with a preacher's wife and it triggers the most ridiculous sequence of events ever imagined. Whether it's the most unintentionally hilarious piece of work ever created or just Kells trolling us all, it's absolutely worth your time. Anyway, the cinematic event of the century is going down this Friday as Music Box Theatre presents a midnight showing of R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet. Step in the name of love all the way there.
Summer's final weekends are numbered, act accordingly. This weekend, we'll be tasting pastéis at Brasil Fest Chicago, wolfing down the best of Little Italy at Taylor Street Festa Italiana, and upgrading our barren bedroom walls at Bucktown Arts Fest.
Fall is coming, which means layering season is upon us. Thankfully, The Magnificent Mile Shopping Festival is this weekend and not a moment too soon. Over the next 12 days, Michigan Avenue's famous stretch of retail bliss will be buzzing with celebrity appearances, fashion shows and live music from internationally recognized recording artists like Jason Derulo and Coco Jones. The calendar is packed with culinary events, meet-and-greets and, of course, special offers on everything you need to stunt this fall.
If there's one thing you should do before summer's over, it's call your grandma "just cause." C'mon, she's the only one who knows it's your birthday without a day-of prompting on Facebook. But if there are TWO things you should do before summer's over, it's call your grandma AND go to a movie in the park. This weekend offers The Wiz, an adaptation of the Wizard of Oz and, undoubtedly, Michael Jackson's greatest performance ever (and, yes, we're counting the HIStory Tour).
Every single from Maroon 5 sounds like it could be in a Pepsi commercial. They're so sing-a-long-y that I know the words to their next joint before it's even written. But I will not give any shine to that "Moves Like Jagger" number because I do not mess with that song, like, at all. But otherwise, I'm going to be belting out payphone soliloquies, testaments to Sunday mornings, and how much sheee wiiillll beee loooved *dreamy Adam Levine voice*. See you there.
