It's December and you know what that means: Christmas music - lots of it. It's hard to find a soul that doesn't warm when hearing classic carols but every once in a while, a fresh take on old tunes is welcome and refreshing. These three Chicago-area shows will have your holiday spirit soaring high and leave you with a new tradition for the family.
The New Switcharoo's The Haunting of Old Ebenezer (12/13-19)
Remember the tale of old Ebenezer Scrooge? You've never heard it like this before. Local performance group The New Switcharoo's original folk rock re-telling of the age old holiday story combines a narrated illustrated storybook of A Christmas Carol with live performances of 16 heart-warming songs that put a modern spin on the vintage tale. It's a hearty acoustic performance that's received rave reviews throughout the city. Check out "The Haunting of Old Ebenezer" on December 13, 14, 15 and 19. Ticket and venue information and a free download of the pageant's original music is available on the band's website.
Redmoon Theater's Winter Pageant (12/13-22)
Cheers to Redmoon Theatre for continually being on the cutting edge of modern theatrical performances. This year, their Winter Pageant is dialogue-free, an ode to silent film-era acting, but that's not to say there won't be plenty of excitement on the stage. A cast of 40 will use puppets, shadow play and choreography accompanied by musical styles from both Eastern and Western culture to tell the tale of a flock of birds that must retrieve their Tree of Light from an enemy raven. This family-friendly production runs December 13 through 22 with one show on Friday evenings two shows on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for kids. Get more info on the Theatre's website.
Welcome Yule! with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (12/14-23)
Sure, the symphony might not be your first idea for an outing with your kids but the Chicago Symphony Orchesta's Welcome Yule! show is a performance not to be missed. "Christmas in Chicago" is just one of the many Christmastime favorites you'll hear in beautiful, full-bodied orchestral arrangements. The lovely holiday decorations that adorn the Symphony Center every December bulk up the cheer even further. Please note that this show is strongly recommended for children age five and up. Welcome Yule! performances will occur on December 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 and 23. Tickets begin at $38. A full list of shows and ticket prices are available on the CSO's website.
