I love raising my kids in Chicago - every year we can count on brand-new exhibits, restaurants, educational programs and stage performances that welcome children and families with open arms. Here are some of our most anticipated family-friendly events and attractions for 2013.
Nominee: Food: The Nature of Eating at the Nature Museum (Spring)
This spring, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum will present the world premiere of Food: The Nature of Eating, a new self-developed exhibit that will explore how food connects us to the natural world and to each other, giving visitors the chance to follow their food from land to market to table. Through innovative hands-on interactives, family activities and public programs, Food promises to explore our fascination one of our favorite activities - eating!
Nominee: The Jungle Book at the Goodman Theatre (July 21-July 28)
Tony Award winner Mary Zimmerman and the Goodman Theatre present this new musical adaptation of a Rudyard Kipling's classic. Featuring music from the classic Disney film, this world premiere is bound to be the children's theatre event of the season.
Under the Skyscrapers: Indoor Overnight at the Lincoln Park Zoo (January 18)
Our family is looking forward to having a sleepover with the lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) at the Lincoln Park Zoo in early 2013. The evening will begin with dinner, followed by a chance to explore zoo nightlife. We love our city zoo and look forward to seeing what the animals are up to in the wee hours of the night. Join us!
Nominee: The Magnificents at the House Theatre (January 18-March 10)
Writer and actor Dennis Watkins' pays homage to his grandfather, Ed Watkins, the iconic and pioneering American illusionist, bringing to life an extraordinary family in The Magnificents. Magic tricks of the trade will be showcased as an aging magician quietly accepts a wayward young boy as his protégé. We loved Dennis Watkins in Houdini in 2012, and look forward to seeing more of his amazing magic tricks in 2013.
Nominee: Summer Camp at the Adler Planetarium (Summer)
My 11-year-old will be packing his bags for outer space in summer 2013 via the Adler Planetarium Summer camps for kids, teens, and tweens. Introduce your child to science concepts and engage their creativity through a wide variety of summer day camp experiences for ages 5 through 14. Registration will open on January 29 at 10:00 a.m.
