Shedd Aquarium - Dolphin - Blog

We're still going strong with the #TheChoosieAwards and we haven't forgotten about your check book. Chicago Like a Local's resident penny pincher is here with the 2013 attractions that will make you smile big and save bigger. Let's go get it!

Nominee: Skating in the Sky at the John Hancock Center (875 N. Michigan Avenue)

Ice skating in the sky! Well, kind of. This is the only place in Chicago where you can skate over 1000 feet in the air and, without a doubt, behold the city's best view. The rink is made of a synthetic material called "Xtraice" but the skate experience is identical to a frozen Minnesota lake.  It's awesome for families. It's awesome for groups. And you guys know I am the king of finding you the best deals around. Drumroll... $6 admission and $1 rentals! BAM!

Nominee: The Shedd Aquarium (1200 S. Lakeshore Drive)

At the Shedd, you can amerce yourself in the deep blue sea without getting wet. That's reason enough to make the trip to Museum Campus. The Shedd is a field trip staple, so when I was in school I took a lot of trips here FOR FREE! Beautiful creatures and Mrs. Mason... good times. Anyway, the aquarium offers exhibitions and shows, many of which are reasonably priced.

Nominee: The Museum of Science and Industry (5700 S. Lakeshore Drive)

This Chicago institution has been around for more than 125 years and is a lynchpin in Chicago culture. The exhibits here are some of the best in the world, including a real life German U-boat used in World War II. The specific exhibitions are great. I especially enjoyed Charlie Brown the Exhibit. I've been, like 28 times. I am and always have been a "journal kid" and this display affected me for the better. The best $15 you can spend and the kiddos are just $9 each.

Nominee: Smart Museum of Art (5550 S. Greenwood Avenue)

Be smart. This beautiful gem is one of the unspoken treasures of Chicago and, best of all, it's free to the public. I met the exhibition's director, Jen, while at a terrific party at the Smart Museum and instantly wondered why I'd never been there before. The place includes an expertly curated collection of Asian, Contemporary and European artwork

Nominee: Lucky Strike Lanes (322 E. Illinois Street)

Get out of the gutter and enjoy the party at Lucky Strike Lanes. The place takes on more of an adult feel after 8:00pm, but is family-friendly before then. Not the cheapest place on this list, but considerably less expensive than bottle service at a downtown nightclub.

And the Choosie Goes To... *picture gold envelope and pretty girl coming from stage left*

The Museum Of Science and Industry! Whether you're local or a visitor, you will love this cool (reasonably priced) factory of knowledge. #TheChoosieAwards is an ongoing series that previews the best of Chicago in 2013.
