The colorful carnival traditions of the Caribbean region unfold at Hyde Park's Midway Plaisance for the annual Windy City Carnival on Saturday, August 20. Chicago's diverse Caribbean community, including Jamaicans, Trinidadians, Haitians, Puerto Ricans and Belizeans come together to celebrate their rich culture for an all day festival of parades, food and music.
For over 20 years, Chicago's has hosted a Caribbean carnival that features the pageantry of masquerade bands that compete for the best band prize. This year's carnival will showcase vividly costumed and plumed revelers parading down the Midway to lively soca music provided by the Windy City Carnival Mix Masters. Vendors selling Caribbean crafts, flags and foods make this a fun event for the whole family.
On Sunday, the party continues with the Final Fete awards ceremony at The Promontory. The Carnival Midwest Band of the Year will be crowned and three DJs will pump rhythms from 9-2AM. Admission is $10 but guests dressed in "Mass Regalia" or full costume get in free until 10:30PM.
