Margie's Candies is a Chicago original, the backdrop of many first dates, engagements and good-report card celebrations. Since 1921, this Chicago candy and ice cream shoppe has been serving its patrons - including Al Capone and The Beatles - their signature sundaes, splits and housemade chocolates from its small parlor at the corner of Western, Armitage and Milwaukee avenues. On your next visit to Chicago, hop on the Blue line to the Western Avenue stop and walk the half block to this Chicago legend, making sure to arrive with an empty stomach!

Our family lives within walking distance from Margie's, and you're likely to find us there on a warm summer night, each of us dipping our spoons into a sundae with a smile. I love the classic Turtle Sun: vanilla ice cream served in Margie's signature oyster shedaell-like dish, topped with nuts, caramel, a generous swirl of whipped cream, a cherry, and a small metal pitcher filled to the brim with the best hot fudge sauce ever. The portions here are so huge that I still share my sundae with my almost three-year-old daughter. Every sundae and split comes with a vanilla wafer cookie, delightful for dipping.

My son loves the Swiss Miss: two scoops of French vanilla ice cream topped with marshmallow and chocolate sauce, whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Margie's also serves lunch and dinner diner dishes - everything from soups and sandwiches to salads - but I must admit that we've never ordered anything off the non-ice cream menu. Margie's is all about going straight to the sundaes.

For serious ice cream lovers with big appetites (or better yet, for couples or families that like to share...) the World's Largest Terrapin features a whopping fifteen scoops of ice cream topped with kettle fresh hot fudge sauce, a banana, a cookie, whipped cream and nuts. You can also keep it simple and order a cone to go, but Margie's is all about the old-fashioned ambience, so I strongly suggest dining in and taking a few steps back in time. Margie's hand-dipped cherry cordials make a sweet souvenir.

Margie's Candies - a don't-miss Chicago ice cream institution - is located at 1960 North Western Avenue, near the Western stop on the Blue Line. Open daily from 9am - midnight.
