Craving sushi, our family set out to Macku Signature in Lincoln Park, the latest restaurant from Chef Macku Chan, and an extension of the Macku Sushi brand. In part to keep the kids entertained and in part to watch the chef work his magic, our family sat at the bar overlooking the kitchen - and Chef Macku did not disappoint. He and his staff created some of the most artistically plated dishes I've ever seen, encouraging adventuresome eating in my kids while treating me to creative new versions of old favorites.
Its proximity to local theaters and nightlife make Macku Signature an ideal date night destination before a show or even a family night out. But the true draw is the light, creative cuisine. We opted for the telling the chef our price point and asked him to prepare whatever was in-season and inspired. Indeed Chef Macku delivered, as plate after plate of mouth-watering dishes were prepared directly in front of us. We tucked away pan-seared, New Zealand bison tenderloin, topped with a seasonal frisée, yamamomo berry, and cranberry cabernet reduction; seared tuna steak with a crispy onion tempura and a sake soy reduction; a warming puréed carrot soup with alaskan king crab, white miso, and cream; unbeatable fresh sushi and sashimi. We continued trying dish after dish, perfectly proportioned to give us a wide variety of delightful tastes and textures.
The kids so admired Chef's cooking skills and creative presentation that they couldn't help but to give every dish a try. My 12-year-old son was delighted by dessert most of all - a sweet tower made of elegantly carved fruit, balls of fruity sorbet, and a sampling of mochi.
To top off our visit to Macku Signature, we enjoyed live jazz by the Elaine Dame Duo. You can catch this local jazz gem every Wednesday night at Macku Signature from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Also on Thursdays, just say yes to the premium Sake flight.
If you're looking for a pre or post theater dinner, or if you just want to dig into some sushi with or without kids, head on over to Macku Signature at 2925 N Halsted Street. For the best view, ask for a seat with a kitchen view, and ask the chef to prepare the best of the season for you, fitting with your tastes.
