Summertime in Chicago is the best. There are miles of lakefront to explore, parks to play in, neighborhood festivals to chow down, plus entertaining live theater to enjoy. Take a break from the heat and see a Broadway In Chicago production downtown! Here's their summer lineup...
Ding dong the Mormons are back! Say Hello! to a brand new Chicago cast of the Tony-award winning musical The Book of Mormon. This is the musical's third run in Chicago in the last four years, so clearly we're big fans. For those of you living under a rock since it debuted in 2011, Mormon is a show about, well, Mormons, created by the guys behind South Park and Avenue Q. It follows two young men, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, as they go on a mission to Uganda, Africa to convert locals to their religion. Without spoiling too much, it obviously doesn't go according to plan.
This show is hands down the funniest musical ever (you don't need to be a theater geek to love it), and yes, the vulgarity is absolutely hilarious. The cast is top notch, the singing is incredible, the characters are so lovable and hysterical. There is nothing wrong with this show!
It's only playing through August 14 at The PrivateBank Theatre, so buy your tickets before it sells out. Fun fact: there's a pre-show drawing at the box office every day there's a show, making a limited number of tickets available at $25 each!
Many of us grew up with the Saturday-morning melodies of Schoolhouse Rock. This live show packs in the nostalgia and teaches you a thing or two in a hip, new way. The academic rock concert features quite the funky soundtrack, with entertaining interpretations of the Emmy Award-winning series' classic songs and lessons (remember Just a Bill?). The cast from Emerald City Theatre is as bright as their costumes, bringing the fun back to fundamentals.
The show is only 50 minutes (no intermission), so it's great for the kiddos! Schoolhouse Rock LIVE! runs July 8 - August 28 at the Broadway Playhouse. Buy your tickets!
Disney's Newsies also returns to Chicago, direct from Broadway! You may have seen the movie back in 1992 about newspaper delivery boys featuring Batman (OK, Christian Bale), but it doesn't compare to seeing this super energetic and uplifting musical live. There's singing, lots of dancing (these men are so good at toe touches), and a strong message of staying true to yourself. Plus, who doesn't love a good "based on true events" story?
Seize the Day and buy your tickets to see this classic musical playing July 28 - August 7 at the Cadillac Palace Theatre.
Every summer, Broadway In Chicago hosts a FREE concert in Millennium Park! It's a great way for you to see what's coming up next season for BIC. Pack a picnic and watch from the Great Lawn of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion as you see musical numbers from Disney's Aladdin, Beautiful - The Carole King Musical, The Bodyguard with Grammy Award-nominee and R&B superstar Deborah Cox, Finding Nemo, the 2015 Tony Award-Winning Best Musical Fun Home, Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera and more!
It's a one-night-only event on August 15 starting at 6:15 p.m. Get there early as it fills up quick!
