Rock N Roll Running Festival

Do you happen to enjoy running and rock 'n' roll music, because if so, there isn't a more perfect event for you this weekend. Usually when you work out, you probably have rock music blasting through your earbuds. Well, this Sunday the 20th, leave the earbuds at home. I'll explain.

Throughout the Chicago Rock N' Roll Half Marathon and 5K this Sunday, rock bands, along with various other genres, will be located throughout the course to help keep those legs pumping. Now, if you visualized a couple of guys on the side of the street strumming their guitars, think again. Local rock bands will be set up on stage and professionally hooked up to keep the runners and residents rocking. Now when you ask your friends and family to come cheer you on, you'll give them more of a reason to show up rather than just seeing you for that split second when you pass them. I'm kidding ... sort of.

Pacing the runner field will be Olympic bronze medalist and top American female marathoner, Shalene Flanagan, who set her half marathon personal record of 1:08:31 at Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans last year. Use Flanagan as motivation, but don't expect to be beating her anytime soon.

Let's backtrack for just a moment. The festivities actually start Saturday, July 19th with a 5K and a fitness expo at McCormick Place. If you plan on running either of the races, be sure to stop by the Health & Fitness Expo to pick up your race number, gear bag and t-shirt. Even if you are not running the race, you are highly encouraged to stop by the Health & Fitness Expo on either Saturday or Sunday. The event is everybody's favorite price, free (excluding parking). More than 70 exhibitors will be in attendance showcasing the latest in running gear, sports apparel, health & nutritional information and much, much more! Pick up some last-minute race essentials before race day and be sure to visit the Brooks Official Merchandise Store.

Saturday's 5K starts at 8:00 a.m. at the lakefront path at E. Monroe Drive and circles around and finishes at the same location. Sunday's 5K and half marathon start at Grant Park, Columbus Dr. and Monroe at 6:30 a.m. and once again circle and finish at the same location. Complete a race on both Saturday and Sunday and receive the all-new Remix Challenge Medal!

The best part about running this weekend may very well be for the good causes the event supports. Team Chance, one particular group participating this weekend, is running to support the Jackson Chance Foundation, an Illinois not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing resources to families with infants in the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) at Chicago's Lurie's Children's Hospital.
