The National Hockey League just announced that outdoor hockey will return to Chicago's historic Soldier Field in 2014. The Chicago Blackhawks will face the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7pm CT on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in the headline event of the league's new 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series, which will feature a number of outdoor games to complement the uber-successful Winter Classic.
This will be the third time in five years that Chicago will host a significant outdoor hockey event.
On Jan. 1, 2009, the Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field in a fantastic Original Six matchup as the league's second Winter Classic. That day, 40,818 watched a great game from inside Wrigley Field, while thousands thousands more watched the game from rooftop seats across the street from the ballpark.
And earlier this year, on Feb. 17, 2013, Soldier Field hosted the Hockey City Classic, featuring two college hockey games. Miami (Ohio), Minnesota, Wisconsin and Notre Dame took part in this exciting event that showcased the beautiful Chicago skyline and four of the best college teams in the country. Officially, 52,051 were in attendance for this exceptional doubleheader.
