Brunch - Pancakes - Blog

Our family is a big fan of Sunday brunch: it's our after-church and pre-nap must-do. Here are three of our favorite kid-friendly brunch spots.

Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba  (2024 N. Halsted)

Café Ba-Ba-Reeba (773/935-5000) is a guaranteed hit for the entire family. Parents can enjoy the Bloody Mary bar (order the vodka from your server and you do the mixing!) while the kids kick back with orange-peach smoothies. Kids adore the breakfast tapas, like the bacon mac n' cheese and the teeny-tiny short stack of pancakes. I love the omelets here, but always take a bite of my son's favorite, the buttermilk waffle with warm bananas and caramel sauce.

Shaw's Crab House (21 E. Hubbard St.)

The all-you-can-eat Sunday brunch buffet at Shaw's Crab House (312-527-2722) is the star of the show in the family brunch world. Not only are kids free (!!!) with a paying adult, but the kid and adult friendly sweet table is to die for. You'll find just-spun cotton candy, decadent truffle pops, tartlets, candies and more. Parents will love the stellar fresh seafood, including the signature king crab legs.

Jam (3057 W. Logan Blvd.)

Logan Square is off the beaten tourist path, but worthy of a Sunday brunch visit and easily reachable by public transportation (Blue Line: Logan Square). Though not necessarily kid-centered, there is a fab toy store next door, where you can pick up a doo-dad for the kids to play with while you eat (or promise to do so after good restaurant behavior). Likewise, the menu is not kid-centered and features unique spins on standard brunch faves. My kids love the malted French toast with macerated cherries and the fresh fruit juices. This mom loves the Bellinis and the Eggs Benedict.
