The Mighty Ted is an original comedic musical about the inspirational Ted Waltmire. Ted suffered a stroke just a couple short years ago, damaging not only his body, but his career. Things were emotional and difficult for his friends and family. And, just to cap it all off, the stroke kept him from playing the piano with both hands. By all rights, a tragic story ends right there. But then again, you don't know the amazing human being that is my friend, Ted.
I first met Ted Waltmire as my student in a Comedy Writing class in early 2011. I had the pleasure of teaching Ted again (many months later) and noticed a profound improvement in his recovery. Ted went on to complete the improv and writing programs at The Second City Training Center despite undergoing intense physical therapy and recovery during his time there.
As an avid, lifelong fan of musical theater, Ted always wanted to write a musical.
So, he sought out his former improv teacher, Jay Sukow, to direct and develop a show. The two have since collaborated with many members of the talented Chicago comedy community, and The Mighty Ted was born. This autobiographical story is touching, hilarious, and playing to sold out houses. As a person who has seen many funny performances come and go over the years in Chicago, Ted's true story is one not to miss.
