Winter is the perfect time to learn something new or, even better, to improve upon something you already love. As far as dancing is concerned, salsa seems to be the style that everyone wants to get into, but never takes opportunity to do so. While the weather continues to cool down we suggest you stay warm on these dance floors.
Every Sunday night, the Cubby Bear transforms from a mainstay Wrigleyville sports bar into a spicy salsa hotbed. You'll receive lessons from members of the Latin Street Dance Academy. Once you're warmed up, it's time to show off your skills. DJ Frankie J spins tropical rhythms all night long. Psst -- skip the $10 cover by signing up for the guest list. Get more info here.
Lalo's (737 W. Maxwell St.) serves up Latin food and music seven days a week but Wednesday nights are when the place comes alive with the spirit of salsa music. Starting at 9:30 p.m. "Tropical Night" is on and so is your duty to keep the dance floor lively.
Popular River North bar/restaurant Nacional 27 is the perfect stepping off point for those looking to polish their salsa dancing talents. Come for a delicious dinner and drinks and stay for the complimentary salsa lessons every Thursday starting at 8 p.m.
Head to the West Loop on Tuesdays for Alhambra Palace's salsa night. Starting at 7:30 p.m., you'll receive salsa lessons on the house (plus a voucher for a first free lesson at Latin Rhythms Studio) then, when the clock strikes 8:30 p.m., the music kicks off. A team of house DJs spin everything from classic to contemporary salsa beats. Accommodating up to 500 dancers each week, this is one of the city's biggest salsa nights.
