Every weekend is busy in Chicago but if you're a vinylphile, then there's only one upcoming date on your calendar. Saturday, April 18, is the annual celebration of Record Store Day and the city is going to be packed full of special events.
Here are the best places to go crate digging.
Recently opened Wicker Park megastore Shuga Records is definitely making a splash on its first Record Store Day. The store will open early at 8 a.m. with Dark Matter coffee and Cinnamon Shuga' Donut Holes from Glazed & Infused to fill up on before a long day of shopping. The first 100 customers will receive special gifts including sealed LPs, t-shirts, books and more. Limited edition RSD releases will be available and sold on a first come, first serve basis. Live entertainment for the day includes sets from Fee Lion, Ty Maxon, Quinn Tsan, Anthony Saint, Jessica Marks and Zistebra. Saki in Logan Square has a day full of festivities planned. The store opens at 9 a.m. and will host performances from Cheap Girls, Advance Base, The Sueves, Sleeping Bag, Oshwa and Supreme Nothing. Laurie's Planet Of Sound is planning a day full of guest DJ sets, live performances and surprises. The Polkaholics will kick things off, Phil Angotti & Friends will be performing Simon & Garfunkel's Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme in full and WXRT's legendary personality Terri Hemmert will be on hand to meet fans. Dusty Groove is your home for everything from jazz to global to funk to folk records. The doors will open at 8 a.m. on RSD and the first 100 people through the door will receive a special gift. Spin the wheel of fortune with every purchase you make and enjoy refreshments, giveaways and even live magic while you shop.
Bucket O' Blood Books And Records will open up at 10 a.m. on Saturday with a slew of exclusive Record Store Day releases available on a first come, first serve basis. Free food and drinks will be available during the day along with giveaways.
Reckless Records will have happenings throughout the day at all three of the local favorite's locations. The Lakeview storefront will feature live performances from Chicago veteran rockers Local H and local up and comers NE-HI. Check out the recently moved Wicker Park location for a performance from Sea & Cake and a signing by Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo. Tim Kinsella will perform at the Loop area store. The folks at Revolution Brewing have teamed up with Reckless for a special edition RSD beer called "Hand Over Fist" and will be throwing a day party at Emporium Arcade Bar (across the street from the Wicker Park location) to celebrate. Local bands Ribbonhead, Roach Beach and Meat Wave will perform and anyone who brings in a $50+ receipt from Reckless will receive free samples of the new brew and game tokens!
Speaking of day parties, Boiler Room is hosting a Record Store Day Brunch on Saturday for shoppers who need to break and refuel. Stop by from noon to 4 p.m. for pizza, special Co-op bloody Marys and performances from The Lulabelles and Model Stranger. RSVP at Do312 for access to a hosted bar from PBR.
Multi-level venue Reggie's and its adjacent Record Breakers store win the award this year for the most live music packed into one day. Record Breakers will open at 8 a.m., offering exclusive releases and 50% off CDs to shoppers. More than a dozen local bands will play in the record store, in the Music Joint cafe, Rock Club venue and up on the roof deck. Saturday will culminate with a performance from longtime Chicago staples Lucky Boys Confusion. Check the venue's website for a full list of performers and scheule. Day show are free but the LBC performance does require a ticket purchase.
If one day isn't enough for you, Chicago vinyl advocates Cage + Aquarium DJs has a week's worth of celebrations in store leading up to Record Store Day. Things kick off Monday at Cage + Aquariums Studios then move to the Tonic Room for a hip hop and house set on Tuesday. Head to The Whistler on Wednesday, Northbar on Thursday and Dark Horse in Wrigleyville on Friday. When the big day finally arrives you can catch C + A spinning at Jerry's in Wicker Park. True to form for the collective, all DJs sets will be spun on vinyl and vinyl only.
