If anyone questions Chicago's status as an artistic capital, this blog entry will take away all remaining doubt. For the second year in a row, Chicago welcomes the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art (AKA Expo Chicago - September 19-22) for what is sure to be an exciting, enlightening, and action-packed weekend full of wall mounted wonder.
September 20-22, 2013, we welcome contemporary artists and galleries from around the world. With works from more than 125 leading international galleries in its tow, this year's Expo looks to build on last year's success. The galleries featured represent 17 countries and 36 different cities, so this comprehensive takes on contemporary art today also offers a wide-ranging, international scope.
The event takes place in another design marvel, Navy Pier, with an ingenious floor plan inspired by Chicago's own gridded streets. The art featured spans many mediums, with the addition of Expo Video this year. Expo Video is a section completely dedicated to modern art in film and video form.
While Expo Chicago offers some of the most established contemporary art galleries in the world, the festival also believes in supporting newer and underexposed galleries as well. Expo features these galleries in a special section of the floor plan called Exposure. These newbies, many of which are participating in their first major international fair, include Bourouina Gallery (Berlin), Callicoon Fine Arts (New York), Diaz Contemporary (Toronto), JTT (New York), MARSO (Mexico City), Galerie Max Mayer (Düsseldorf), On Stellar Rays (New York), ANDREW RAFACZ (Chicago), Jessica Silverman (San Francisco) and Workplace Gallery (Gateshead, London).
The Local Options
As if there was not enough to entice you to this event, almost every art organization in Chicago is getting a piece of the action too. The School at the Art Institute has adapted its year-round Dialogues program to include the Expo Art artists. The Dialogues program encourages artistic discourse and the thoughtful discussion of art pieces.
Pop-Up Store at The Expo
