Chamber Musicians

I believe that it's never too early to introduce children to the joy of live music, dance and theatre. Thankfully, many Chicago theaters now offer a variety of shows that allow even toddlers to experience live performance in a supportive, educational, and extremely family-friendly environment.

Here's a chance to enjoy the world-class Chicago Chamber Musicians with your preschooler. Fairy Tales by William Bolcom, presented at the charming Chicago Shakespeare Courtyard Theater, the cultural gem of Navy Pier. The theater itself will give kids a taste of what it was like to attend a show long ago at The Globe.

In Fairy Tales by William Bolcom, children will be introduced to classic fairy tales, including The Frog Prince, Jorinda and Joringel, The Fisherman and His Wife and The Hare and the Hedgehog. Throughout this musical journey, kids will discover how individual instruments are played, how they play together, and how they can interrelate with actors to create a theatrical event. Excerpts from the Simple Symphony by Benjamin Britten, composer of the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra and based on music from his childhood, will also be presented.

The Chicago Chamber Musicians 2013/2014 season marks both Benjamin Britten's 100th birthday anniversary and the 75th birthday of William Bolcom. Composer William Bolcom, Professor Emeritus of Composition at the University of Michigan, is the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Music and the National Medal of Arts, the highest award in the arts bestowed by the President of the United States. Fairy Tales is directed by Scott Weinstein.

The one-hour concert is geared towards children ages 4 and up. Afterwards, you'll have plenty of time to enjoy Navy Pier: Play and learn at the Chicago Children's Museum,  build your own teddy bear, or travel to another land with IMAX.
