From deep-dish pizza to Italian beef sandwiches to caramel-cheese popcorn, Chicago is a city famous for signature tasty treats. Chicago Food Planet capitalizes on the city's delicious traditions with food tours that explore fascinating Windy City history. There are a range of tours to choose from, focusing on different foods and Chicago neighborhoods. This time of year, take advantage of the seasonal Winter Delights tour—a great opportunity to get out and nosh around Chicago's Old Town neighborhood.
FIRST STOP: BUZZ BAIT TAQUERIA
Wells Street in the historic Old Town neighborhood is the focus for the two-hour tour, which mixes neighborhood tidbits with flavorful bites. My guide, Alex, greeted me with a smile and a handy booklet that included a map with neighborhood restaurants and things to do after the tour.
We started with excellent salmon bowls from Buzz Bait Taqueria. While we nibbled away, Alex delivered some background about the restaurant as well as the details of how the Old Town neighborhood was established.
NEXT STOP: SPICE HOUSE
We ventured outside to walk to our next stop, the Spice House, a shop filled with specialty spices and herbs. We sampled three kinds of cinnamon and learned the differences between pepper served around the world.
THE TOUR CONTINUES . . . WITH ARTISAN OILS, BAKED GOODS & CHOCOLATE
At the end of the two-hour tour, I felt pleasantly full of food and Chicago history knowledge both!
Tours depart every half hour Friday through Sunday, starting at 11 a.m., and go on rain, snow or shine. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes and be prepared for light walking. Experience is appropriate for all ages and fitness levels.
Tickets are $42/adult, $25/8-12 yrs and $15/7 yrs and younger: BOOK NOW
The Winter Delights tour runs through March 19. If you're interested in Chicago Food Planet's other neighborhood food tours, check out The World's Fare, a Wicker Park food tour that includes four restaurant stops with wine pairings, running during the winter and throughout the rest of the year.
