As you stroll through the Gold Coast looking through the haute couture in the Oak Street boutiques, you might think “Wow, I’d like to stay awhile and explore the neighborhood.” It’s a capital idea, and the Hotel Indigo Downtown/Gold Coast (1244 N. Dearborn Parkway) is the perfect place to park your bags and put your feet up.
Entering the lobby, note the stunning works of art by the artist Bill Olendorf and the signature bright and welcoming interior that distinguish the Hotel Indigo brand around the United States.
After checking in, you may wish to pause for a few moments at the bar to have a drink and watch the world go by. It’s also worth noting that they also serve all three meals at their first floor restaurant, 1244 Bar and Bistro. My recommendation is to start each day of your visit there with breakfast to prepare yourself for the day’s activities.
Hotel Indigo Amenities
Of course, your room is your sanctuary during your stay, and they certainly don’t skip on the amenities around here. Along with their signature brilliant color scheme that makes you feel seaside in the best way possible, each room features free morning newspaper service, an elaborate workplace setting, and bathrooms with contemporary fixtures and salon-quality shampoos and other toiletries.
While you may not need such amenities, visitors will be pleased to learn that the hotel also has a meeting space equipped with high-speed, wired, and wireless internet access, along with audio-visual equipment. Additionally, the hotel can provide catering for your meeting or other gathering.
During your stay, you may want to pay a visit to the nearby Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, which is but a few blocks away at 4 West Burton Place. Housed in the stunning Madlener House, built by architect Richard E. Schmidt, the Foundation has a series of rotating exhibits that pay homage to the rich tradition of the visual arts around the world. During your visit you might find anything from an installation celebrating Latin American architecture to a consideration of collage and its relationship to theatrical set design. (Foundation hours: Wed–Sat, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.)
Of course, there's a million other things to do in and around the Gold Coast neighborhood, and even a casual stroll up State Parkway will reveal a clutch of beautiful brownstones and rather distinguished pied-a-terres. Give careful attention to the stunning details around your walks around the neighborhood. In a very real way, it might be your favorite part of being outside the hotel.
