Chicago’s new Michigan Avenue Apple Store will open along the Chicago River on Oct. 20. The 20,000 square-foot glass building is located at 401 N. Michigan Avenue, and will replace the current downtown Chicago location at 679 N. Michigan Avenue.
A metallic roof which resembles Apple’s iconic Macbook computer tops the new flagship store. A grand staircase leads down to the riverfront and an outdoor gathering space.
"Our team has designed a spectacular pavilion that seamlessly connects the plaza to the promenade as a part of the city's plan to transform the city's riverfront," said Apple's senior vice president of retail, Angela Ahrendts, during an Apple press event in Cupertino, California that also unveiled the latest models of the iPhone and Apple Watch.
At the press event, Ahrendts said Apple’s new retail locations – including the new flagship store on Michigan Avenue – are inspired by town squares. They aim to be a mix of a retail store, education center, and gathering place.
“We actually don’t call them stores anymore,” said Ahrendts. “We call them town squares, because they’re gathering places for the 500 million people who visit us every year. Places where everyone’s welcome, and where all of Apple comes together.”
Where Ideas Sing
In connection with this theme, the Chicago opening will celebrate with several upcoming events (sign up beginning 10.10.17) and arts initiatives:
- Live Art: Typography with Matthew Hoffman (October 21, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
- Photo Walks: Time-lapse with Craig Shimala (October 21, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.)
- Sketch Walks: Marina City Architecture with Iker Gil (October 22, 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.)
"Where Ideas Sing" is a creative collaboration with two renowned Chicago artists. This city anthem was written and performed by hip-hop artist Saba, and his lyrics were brought to life by artist Matthew Hoffman. These lyrics and the artwork are on display now.

Chicago’s “Apple Town Square” is one of several new flagship locations opening around the world. Other cities slated for Apple Town Squares include Paris, Washington, D.C., Milan, and New York City. Construction for the new Michigan Avenue Apple Store began in early 2016. Foster + Partners, the London-based architectural firm that designed Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, deigned Chicago’s new flagship location.
