Visiting Chicago this winter? Don't forget your ice skates! Some of the best family winter memories are to be made at our beloved Millennium Park, where the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink beckons families with free ice skating amidst some of the most imaginative public art installations in the U.S.
Millennium Park offers year-round fun: In the summertime, my kids love splashing around the Crown Fountain; in the wintertime, the ice rink delights even the littlest skaters (thanks to double blades!).
The rink does become crowded, so arrive early, or purchase a hot cocoa from the Park Grill (located at the center of the park, near the rink) to warm your hands as you wait in line. Perhaps the best time of day of all to visit the rink is in the evening, when the moon and the stars, the sparkling skyline and the twinkling holiday lights will remind you of what a truly wonderful city Chicago is, at all times of the year. The icing on the cake: skating is free! Rentals are available for $10, but feel free to bring your own and skate for free.
There are also a number of other organized activities at Millennium park during the winter. From craft workshops to carolers, from live theater and cabaret to a twilight luminary walk, there is something of interest for everyone in the family at Millennium Park.
