Polar Adventure days family

Don your cold weather gear and head to Northerly Island, a 91 acre peninsula that juts into Lake Michigan, for some Chicago-style Polar Adventures Days this winter! Known for its nature, Northerly Island is a great spot for both migratory bird watching and fishing. In the winter, its views of the icy lake and snowy city are chilly but spectacular. Stop by this Saturday January 25 and again on Saturday February 22 for some special Polar Adventure Days fun.

During the 9th annual Polar Adventure Days on January 25 and February 22, this city island plays host to live animals such as birds of prey from Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation and coyotes from Big Run Wolf Ranch. Families are invited to enjoy Dog sledding demonstrations with huskies of Free Spirit Siberian Rescue and live entertainment from the Dreamtree Shakers from Old Town School of Folk Music. Families can also work together on nature-inspired arts and crafts at tables led by different organization: January features the Art Institute of Chicago; and February features the National Mexican Museum of Art. Even toddlers can join in on the fun at the kid sized "ice fishing" area. Free hot cocoa will be offered to the first 500 participants.

There is nothing quite like snowshoeing on the shores of Lake Michigan, with the icy lake on one side of you and the windswept skyline in the distance, and at Northerly Island, snowshoes are available for rental all winter long at the Northerly Island Visitor's Center. Call ahead to the visitor's center to check that the weather conditions are suitable for snow trekking (there must be at least 3 inches of snow). You can't beat the price for this fun winter activity: $5 for a 2-hour snowshoe rental. On the Polar Adventure Days, snowshoe rentals are offered free of charge.

Northerly Island is located at 1521 S. Linn White Drive, on the Museum Campus. To check on conditions for snowshoeing, or for questions on programs and events, call (312) 745-2910. For more information on Polar Adventure Days, visit chicagoparkdistrict.com/events/polar-adventure-days/
