What did you do for your 10th birthday? Eat some pizza, blow out a few candles and tear through Chuck-E-Cheese's arcade area on an ice cream cake high? Don't be ashamed. That's what you do when you turn 10, unless you're the Harris Theater - then you give back on your birthday. Millennium Park's other big stage celebrates its decade-long gift to the arts with an incredible lineup of 2013-2014 performances.
Harris Theater's 2013-2014 season, which begins in October, will celebrate 10 years' worth of standing ovations by showcasing a handful of must-see premieres, debuts and even a few returning favorites. 10 for the 10th features collaborative new works, diverse programming, and critically-acclaimed artists and ensembles befitting of the season's theme.
Premiers and debuts include:
Sphinx Virtuosi featuring mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves (October 1, 2013)
Sphinx Virtuosi returns to Chicago with its alumni ensemble of award-winning African American and Latino string musicians. Vocal star mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves will join the Sphinx musicians in a singular program including works by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, Bach, Vivaldi, and Piazzolla.
Les Violons du Roy with Stephanie Blythe (October 17, 2013)
Internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe joins with the highly acclaimed Canadian chamber music ensemble Les Violons du Roy in a program of selections by Gluck and Handel. Les Violons du Roy, led by Music Director Bernard Labadie, specializes in the vast repertoire of music for chamber orchestra, performed in the stylistic manner most appropriate to each era. This engagement marks Les Violons du Roy's third visit to the Harris.
Michael Tilson Thomas & New World Symphony (October 19, 2013)
The New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy (NWS), is comprised of the country's most promising young classical musicians. Its acclaimed Founder and Artistic Director, Michael Tilson Thomas, will conduct the orchestra in an evocative work by Italian composer Niccolò Castiglioni -Inverno In-ver - for which noted director, designer and video artist Netia Jones will create a one-of-a-kind video/visual installation.
Mariza (October 23, 2013)
Hailing from Portugal, Mariza has dazzled the world with her unique interpretation of Fado - the traditional Portuguese music style considered by UNESCO as World Intangible Cultural Heritage. Three-time Grammy-nominated Mariza returns to the Harris with a new program, which includes songs that cross all her recordings and that speak directly from her heart and soul.
The Complete Bach Brandenburg Concertos (December 18, 2013)
Celebrate the holidays with the complete Bach Brandenburg Concertos. Called a "holiday staple" by The New York Times, this festive performance is not to be missed. The concert features Joseph Lin, member of the acclaimed Juilliard String Quartet and winner of the First Prize at the inaugural Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand. The 4 New York Times has lauded Lin as "a sensitive, passionate player with a glowing tone" and described his sound as "warm, flexible and perfectly centered."
Savion Glover's STePz (January 14, 2014)
Under the direction of Savion Glover, Savion Glover's STePz is an exuberant celebration of tap dance to sound and sound to dance. Glover and his ensemble of dancers take tap dance to new heights while fusing traditional music selections of the past with his self-proclaimed tap style and energy of the future.
Alonzo King's LINES Ballet With Edgar Meyer (February 27 & 28, 2014)
Alonzo King LINES Ballet helped the Harris Theater launch its 10th season early when the company, along with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, gave the Chicago debut of the Harris-commissioned AZIMUTH this past March.
Wendy Whelan's Restless Creature (March 20, 2014)
New York City Ballet's Wendy Whelan embarks on a new dance adventure with four male choreographers. Whelan, together with her collaborators, will present Restless Creature, an evening of four duets created by and danced with Kyle Abraham, Joshua Beamish, Brian Brooks, and Alejandro Cerrudo.
Trey McIntyre Project With Musicians from Music Institute of Chicago (April 3, 2014)
Trey McIntyre Project (TMP) returns to Chicago following its successful 2012 Harris Theater debut with a new commissioned work, in which the talented musicians from the Music Institute of Chicago will perform live. TMP annually tours the world performing McIntyre's "fresh and forward thinking choreography" - The New York Times, and is known for creating a new era of American contemporary dance that the Harris is excited to present in Chicago.
The Chicago debut of France's Ballet Preljocaj: Blanche Neige (May 2-4, 2014)
Angelin Preljocaj's French dance company from Provence gives its own contemporary take on Blanche Neige (Snow White). Based on the Grimm Brothers' original fairy tale, this full-length story ballet choreographed by Preljocaj features costumes by legendary designer Jean Paul Gaultier. For this ballet, an inspired Gaultier created costumes that are devilishly sexy, including brief nudity, and designs of warrior inspiration that are worth the journey in themselves.
Completing the 2013-2014 season is the popular Family Series, featuring three engaging shows specially created for children ages 4 to 9 and their families. Family Series performances are approximately one hour in length and take place on Saturday afternoons.
