Join the Joffrey Academy of Dance, Official School of The Joffrey Ballet, and professional dancer Andrea Vinson for an African Dance Master Workshop. This family friendly class is an introduction to African dance and is appropriate for all levels of dance experience. You'll learn a variety of traditional African dance steps accompanied by live drummers. The Master Class takes place on the 4th floor of Joffrey Tower, 10 E. Randolph Street, on the official MLK holiday, Monday, January 20, 12:00-1:00 pm. Celebrate science on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 20, at the Museum of Science and Industry's annual Black Creativity Family Day. Learn about academic programs, admissions and campus life at a college fair, experience hands-on activities all over the Museum, including innovation stations, where kids can design and experiment, Jr. Science Cafes, where kids can learn what it's really like to be a scientist, engineer, or innovator. "What Does It Mean, Dr. King?", presented at the Chicago Children's Museum, is a musical play that invites families to investigate the Civil Rights movement. At the end of the 20 minute show, kids can even write their own letter to King, sharing what they've learned and asking questions of their own. Free with museum admission, performances will be held on Monday, Jan. 20 at 11 a.m. and 1, 2 and 3 p.m.
Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy with a Spirit of Chicago Cruise Monday morning, docking at Navy Pier. The cruise will feature live performances of some of the most notable music from the 50's until now alongside the Grand Lunch Buffet menu. Enjoy your day off with your family while learning about the impact of MLK's work today, as well as African American History with an emphasis on politics, sports, culture, music and entertainment.
