Gone are the days when professional kitchens were viewed as male domain. Once stigmatized as realms for burly men, women have proven their mettle running their own kitchens in restaurants. The rise in female-dominated restaurants is something to be celebrated and fostered, which is precisely what is happening at the Five Chefs for Women event at Vermilion on September 25.
Hosted by Bon Appetit Chicago Gourmet and Vermilion restaurant, the venerable event brings together five top-tier females in the industry along with three female beverage professionals, all striving for one common goal: to raise funds for the James Beard Foundation Vermilion Women in Culinary Leadership Scholarship in the culinary field.
The five-course meal showcases the masterwork of Carrie Nahabedian of NAHA and Brindille, Mindy Segal of HotChocolate, Ina Pinkney from her namesake restaurant Ina's, international guest chef Svetlana Riscova from Elements in Latvia, and of course host chef Rohini Dey of Vermillion. Specialty cocktails will be curated by Southern Wine and Spirits of Illinois's master mixologists Debbi Peek and Bridget Albert, plus wine pairings by Mercat a la Planxa's Wanda Cole. Guests will also receive sweet giveaways by Moto pastry chef Claire Crenshaw, double pie marshmallows flavored with pumpkin pie and pecan pie.
The event takes place at Vermillion from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $70 per person, plus tax and gratuity. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 312-527-4060.
