Lake Shore Drive is one of the most fantastic expressways in the world. Memorialized even in song, it's simply wonderful to drive on LSD, along the stunning Chicago lakefront, on a fine summer day. Once a year, the cars are brushed aside for bikes at the annual Bike the Drive, one of the best bike rides in the nation and an excellent way to kick off summer. If your family likes to bike, Bike the Drive on May 25 is a don't miss start-of-summer event.
Bike the Drive will give you the chance to ride safely and smoothly, at your own pace. It isn't a competition but rather a chance to ride along this normally trafficked highway and enjoy the scenery along the way. Kids are welcome. You can start biking as early as 5:30 a.m., when LSD will be closed to cars, and bike five hours, until 10:15 a.m. Find the full guide to the route here: bikethedrive.org/sites/default/files/btd13_ride_guide_web.pdf
Registration fees start at $46 for adults and $15 for kids under 17. All proceeds from Bike the Drive support the Active Transportation Alliance, with 86 cents out of every dollar raised going directly back into advocacy efforts that make Chicago a better place for biking and walking. Don't have a bicycle? Rent one the day of the event!
Remember to wear your helmets. And be sure to check out Bike the Drive's guide to kid bike safety at bikethedrive.org/safety/children. Take this fun quiz before you go, so you're all on the same safety page as a family.
This year's ride takes place on Sunday, May 25. To register, or for more information, visit bikethedrive.org.
