A scene from "A Christmas Story, The Musical!"

With enough productions of A Christmas Carol occurring in the city right now (to my count: five bajillion), it’s enough to make even an old curmudgeon like Scrooge squeal with delight – not to mention the other perennial favorites from local companies that range from dark re-interpretations of well-worn classics to glittery and campy stagings of vintage holiday TV specials to, even, a Klingon take on a seasonal morality tale. So: where do you start your ho-ho-holiday theater-going? Here are a few spirited suggestions.

A Christmas Carol
Goodman Theatre

A Klingon Christmas Carol
The Greenhouse Theater Center
2257 N Lincoln Avenue Chicago
Through Dec. 31
And now for something completely different. I’m far from a Trekkie, but I saw this production last year out of sheer curiosity . To my surprise, it was quite enjoyable! While several bits of Klingon in-jokes and Star Trek humor buzzed right over my head, I found myself laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. It’s like Klingon Kabuki theatre. A foreign, yet fascinating take on a time honored classic.

The Nutcracker
Chopin Theatre
1543 W. Division Chicago
Through Dec. 30
House Theater Chicago offers an alternative to the typical ballet pageantry (if you want that, check out Joffrey Ballet’s production of The Nutracker) by bringing us a darkly-moving reinterpretation of the time-honored story. Featuring puppetry, music and spellbinding stagecraft, this is a do-not-miss production for both kids and adults.

A Christmas Story, The Musical!
Chicago Theatre
Dec. 14-30
That’s right – your favorite holiday movie has been made into a big-budget musical. And the national tour of the show is set to play at the iconic Chicago Theatre. Watch Ralphie as he shemes for that coveted Red Ryder Action Air Rifle BB Gun, laugh at the kookie leg lamp and hold your mouth in horror as friends “double-dog-dare” each other to lick a freezing flagpole.

Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer
Mary's Attic
5400 N. Clark Street Chicago
Dec. 1-30
Chicago’s favorite cross-dressing reindeer is back! This camp-tastic classic makes its return to Mary’s Attic for its 14th year. Each year, we follow the zany antics of Herbie and his pals (including Rudolph!), who remind us that accepting who you are is a real challenge, especially when friends, family, and that nosy Joan Crawford clone, all want you to conform. However, if you simply slip into some sling pumps, snap on a pair of sparkly clip-on earrings and sing out a showtune, happiness will eventually follow.
