This September, more than 100 of the world's top contemporary art galleries will be represented at EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary and Modern Art. Major players like Matthew Marks Gallery (New York) and Richad Gray Gallery (Chicago) will be in attendance, as well as a strong contingent of international exhibitors. If you're looking to max out your American Express card whilst gazing upon some of the globe's most coveted modern art pieces, make plans to be at Navy Pier's Festival Hall September 19-22, 2013.
From Japan to Germany, some of the globe's best galleries will be at EXPO CHICAGO. For the second straight year David Zwirner (New York, London), James Cohan Gallery (New York, Shanghai), Richard Gray Gallery (Chicago, New York), Kavi Gupta Chicago | Berlin (Chicago, Berlin), Annely Juda Fine Art (London), Koenig & Clinton (New York), Galerie Lelong (New York, Paris, Zurich), Barbara Mathes Gallery (New York), Galerie Hans Mayer (Düsseldorf) and David Nolan Gallery (New York, Berlin) will be in the building. New additions to the exhibition include Marianne Boesky Gallery (New York), Isabella Bortolozzi Galerie (Berlin), THE BREEDER (Athens, Monaco), CABINET (London), MASSIMO DE CARLO (Milan, London), Harris Lieberman (New York), Edwynn Houk Gallery (New York, Zurich), Galerie Thomas Schulte (Berlin), Sicardi Gallery (Houston), Skarstedt Gallery (New York), Suzanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects (Los Angeles) and many others.
Support the Locals
EXPO CHICAGO boasts exhibitors from 16 countries, but some of the most ballyhooed spaces will be presented by locals. Richard Gray Gallery (875 N. Michigan Ave.) represents the work of dozens of major artists, and will undoubtedly be one of EXPO CHICAGO's premier galleries. Also getting in on the action is Kavi Gupta Chicago (835 W. Washington Blvd., 219 N. Elizabeth St.), which made headlines recently for carrying works by Ari Marcopoulos, the man behind the cover art for Jay-Z's "Magna Carta Holy Grail."
See What's Next
One of the fair's signature events is EXPOSURE, which, as the name would imply, presents 20 galleries that have been in business for seven years or less. These newbies, many of which are participating in their first major international fair, include Bourouina Gallery (Berlin), Callicoon Fine Arts (New York), Diaz Contemporary (Toronto), JTT (New York), MARSO (Mexico City), Galerie Max Mayer (Düsseldorf), On Stellar Rays (New York), ANDREW RAFACZ (Chicago), Jessica Silverman (San Francisco) and Workplace Gallery (Gateshead, London).
Buy Something Absurdly Expensive
You know the old saying: "A pictures worth a thousand words, unless it's a REALLY good picture, then it's worth, like, a million dollars." Or something like that. Last year, EXPO CHICAGO welcomed Montreal's Landau Fine Art, which brought with it by Picasso, Kandinsky, Matisse and Magritte. Perhaps you've heard of them? Expect similar high end items at this year's event.
