Celebrate Mother's Day by taking the family matriarch out on the town for a special brunch, a pedicure, or a picnic this weekend. The Waldorf Astoria is hosting a brunch fit for a queen at their Balsan Restaurant on Sunday (reservations at (312)-646-1470). The Palmer House Hilton is holding a mom-friendly feast of their own at the in-house Lockwood Restaurant. And Chicago will be buzzing with appreciation for the woman who sat through all of your excruciating junior high musicals, soccer tournaments and questionable "movie night" choices (Ace Ventura again!?) with a smile on her face. Here are five other spots to treat your mom for Mother's Day.
For the mom who loves seafood: Shaw's Crab House (21 E. Hubbard)
Moms who love seafood and sweets will want to reserve a spot at Shaw's Crab House for one of our favorite brunch destinations. The special Mother's Day brunch buffet features classic and over-the-top breakfast fare, including an Omelet & Waffle Station, a Surf & Turf Station (lobster bisque, King Crab Legs, and hand-carved beef!) and a Cold Seafood Bar (sushi, oysters, shrimp, smoked salmon and cold crab). The Sweet Table will be brimming with bite size portions of mom's favorite desserts, like crème brulee, raspberry tartlets, key lime pie, mini cupcakes, and assorted fruits and candy. Every mom will also receive a special $25 Shaw's Crab House gift certificate for future use. $55 for adults, kids 12 and under eat for free.
For the mom that likes to laugh: Comedian Rick Smiley at Chicago Theatre
Check out the Love and Laughter Mother's Day celebration on Saturday, May 11 at 8pm at the Chicago Theatre. Comedian Rickey Smiley and four-time Grammy nominated R&B songwriter Eric Benet promise to make your mom laugh and swoon. Tickets start at $67.50.
For the mom that likes 1940's style big-band swing: Untitled (111 W. Kinzie)
Tell mom to dress up and don her pearls and treat her to free-flowing cava and a delectable brunch buffet at Untititled. This speakeasy-themed space is divided into several different rooms, including a velvet-booth adorned library and a craft cocktail lounge. The John Burnett Orchestra will be swinging into the afternoon as you and your family feast on a wide menu of brunch treats, including roasted suckling pig, gulf shrimp, smoked salmon, and made-to-order omelets. $49.95 for adults; $20 for children 12 and younger.
For the mom that deserves pampering: The Spa at the Four Seasons (120 E. Delaware Pl.)
Celebrate Mom the entire month of May at The Spa at the Four Seasons. Book two 50-minute Four Seasons Natural Beauty Facials and you'll receive two complimentary same-day classic manicures. The 50-minute facial is $150 or $300 for the two facials. Offer is available Sundays through Thursday for the entire month of May. Call 312-649-2340 for appointments.
For the mom who loves the great outdoors: Picnic in Osaka Garden
On a budget this Mother's Day? Pack a picnic and head to the peaceful and picturesque Osaka Garden, located on a wooded island in the middle of a lagoon. You can't find a park more Zen than the Osaka Garden. It's quiet, serene, and complete with gardening elements that will transport you directly to Japan without having to catch that long flight from O'Hare. If you're without a treasure map, Osaka Garden can be found on Wooded Island (Paul H. Douglas Nature Sanctuary) in Jackson Park. Recommended parking is south of the Museum of Science and Industry, the Columbia Drive lot - at Lake Shore Drive and Science Drive (5800 South).
