Watch The Princess Bride in a starlit movie theater.
Every year the charming Music Box Theatre (3733 North Southport Ave.; 773-871-6604) screens one of the most romantic (and funny!) romantic comedies ever, The Princess Bride. Follow along as gallant hero sets out to rescue a beautiful princess from an evil villain. Come dressed as a character from the movie and you might win the pre-show costume contest!

Enjoy a cupcake date.
Chicago has so many wonderful cupcake shop, perfect for a mini-date with your sweetheart. Sweet Mandy B's (1208 W. Webster Ave.; 773-244-1174) is a classic American bakery: With its old-fashioned storefront, soft, pastel décor, and amazing array of traditional American sweets, you'll only find happy faces inside Sweet Mandy B's. At Swirlz Cupcakes (705 W. Belden Ave.; 773-404-2253) you'll find artfully decorated and baked-fresh-daily cupcakes featuring decadent yet light Italian buttercream frosting. Magnolia Bakery (108 N. State St. #128; 312-346-7777) is a beautiful bakery, reminiscent of Grandma's kichen, located in State Street's Block 37: the cupcakes here are almost to pretty to eat.

Instead of giving your loved one a bouquet this Valentine's Day, give them (a visit to) an entire garden. The lush Garfield Park Conservatory (300 North Central Park Ave.; 312-746-5100) is filled to the brim with colorful azaleas, camellias and other lovely blooms, and the children's garden even features a fun slide.

Make a celebratory meal together.
At Kids' Table (2337 West North Ave.; 773-235-2665) family cooking classes, parents and kids work together to create a delicious Valentine's Day feast, and then enjoy it together! At the Friday, February 12, 6-9 pm class, families will prepare and then indulge in heart-shaped pizzas and double chocolate brownie sundaes with strawberry coulis.

 

Set sail on a Valentine's Day brunch cruise.
Hop aboard the Odyssey, a premier Chicago cruiser, for a Valentine's Day Brunch Cruise on Sunday, February 14. You'll enjoy a buffet-style Brunch Menu as you sail Lake Michigan, with the lovely skyline as a swoon-worthy backdrop. The cruise boards at 12:15pm from Navy Pier. Send a funny valentine at Little Beans Cafe.
Celebrate love at Little Beans Cafe (1809 W Webster Ave; 773-251-1025), a coffee shop / indoor playzone where kids can get their cabin-fever jiggles out while participating in fun Valentine's Day activities. On Friday, February 12, from 5-7 pm, kids are invited to make valentines and valentine bags, followed by a sweet exchange. $14 per child; adults are free.
