Comedy powerhouse The Second City has a brand new Mainstage revue, its 105th to be exact, and this one truly slays. Not only does The Winner...of Our Discontent make you laugh, but it makes you think, and it makes you feel, and it opens your eyes. [more]
The caliber of talent at The Second City is legendary (Tina Fey and Steve Carell are both alums of the prolific comedy theatre), and this cast doesn't disappoint. The diverse ensemble brings a fresh perspective on how they're feeling about the world today, and introduces you to some things that you've quite possibly never thought about or experienced before.
So let me break it down for you on why this is a stand out, must-see sketch comedy show.
REASON #1: Strong Women
The three women in this ensemble are so funny, and they each have their own style that complements the group. Kelsey Kinney's facial expressions are incredible, especially during a sketch where she's auditioning for a blue sports drink commercial. Rashawn Nadine Scott is so musically gifted, and all of her songs (both written and improvised) are awesome. Shantira Jackson successfully mixes confidence and vulnerability. From a woman complaining about a Fitbit competition to a slam poet auditioning to be the next President, you love what she has to say.
REASON #2: Solos
A lot of sketch shows will have a solo song or a comedic monologue, however, this revue packs in multiple solo moments for the cast to showcase their talents. You'll interact with a passionate Alabama fan (Martin Morrow), hear from a young woman about black heaven (Jackson), watch a super physical bat boy (Paul Jurewicz), and meet The Bassman (Jamison Webb), to name a few.
REASON #3: Interactive
I loved how much this cast used the entire Mainstage theater space for sketches and improvised moments. From Webb and Jurewicz interviewing audience members as two of Trump's sons to a grand boxing match entrance with no dialogue, they get very creative with the space. Plus, this sketch show has numerous improvised moments, and it's a treat to watch some of the top improvisers in the city weave suggestions into comedy gold.
REASON #4: Brave
It's not easy to get up on stage and make people laugh every night, especially with material you're not used to seeing on Mainstage. However, these six actors make it look easy as they attack the stage and don't quit until the lights go down. It's incredible watching them live their dreams, seeing pure joy and respect beaming from wall to wall. It's a truly special Second City revue, and one that you need to see, more than once.
The Winner... of Our Discontent plays Tuesdays-Thursdays @ 8 p.m.; Fridays-Saturdays @ 8 & 10 p.m.; Sundays @ 7 p.m. at The Second City (1616 N. Wells St.)
