Although your "get set, go" might have nothing to do with a course, there's still plenty to do in Chicago this weekend. A touch of rain in the forecast makes a great case for checking out one of these 10 shows you shouldn't miss this October, performances for the inaugural Chicago International Latino Theater Festival (showing at Steppenwolf and Victory Gardens Theatre) or the South Side Film Festival. Here are some other events in Chicago that should be on your radar.

Even the most die-hard urbanologist could never possibly visit all of Chicago’s distinguished buildings in two, three, or four lifetimes. It would be a formidable task, indeed. Fortunately, there is a weekend of great repute that happens to afford wonderful access to over 200 buildings that would make any student of architecture envious.

Chicago boasts a long history of supplying a vivid backdrop for movies. In classics such as The Blues BrothersFerris Bueller's Day Off and High Fidelity, Chi-town earns starring roles. Films that showcase the North Side and outlying suburbs are regularly cited, but many film lovers don't realize that the South Side has a remarkable film history as well.

From the early 20th century films of Oscar Micheaux, to the array of films shot on the South Side featured in the Black Harvest Film Festival, this area's movie history showcases a rich, if often overlooked, history. The first annual South Side Film Festival remedies that situation with a line-up of South Side film classics.

10 Free Things To Do in Chicago This October

Sunday, October 1, 2017 11:00 AM by Maddy Osman

With fall foliage and the cool breeze comes the spookiest month of the year—October! Besides Halloween festivities, Chicagoans have several things to look forward to, including fall festivals, book expos, art walks and food fairs. Movie fans won't run out of things to watch with several free screenings and the International Film Festival coming up, while history buffs will enjoy free admission to several of Chicago’s best landmarks. Without further ado, here are the top 10 free things to do in Chicago this October.

Why are most of a city’s most beautiful spaces not granted public access? Even those that do might limit admission with entrance fees, while others are completely closed off to the public. Wouldn't it be nice to see what lies behind the closed doors of some of Chicago’s most emblematic buildings?

Thanks to the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF), once a year, the public is invited to explore the inside of usually locked up buildings—completely free of charge.

You won’t want to miss LYRIC OPERA and THE JOFFREY BALLET’s stunning new production of Gluck’s ORPHÉE ET EURYDICE, directed, choreographed and designed by John Neumeier, and sung in French with projected English translation.

The weather is cooler, but the #ChicagoLeafPeeping is prime. As autumn wraps the city in reds and golds, it's the perfect time to check out the harvest festivals and Oktoberfests that are popping up around town. As we cruise into a new month, take a moment to check out the biggest events happening in October, and make some time for these weekend picks (that is, if you don't stay out too late at these bars that keep the party going past last call).

When was the last time you traveled overseas to explore an exotic, faraway land? This fall, you can travel around the world without having to pack your suitcase or hop aboard an airplane. Over 30 cultural institutions are banding together to bring the world to Chicago's doorstep via Inherit Chicago, the city’s first intercultural festival.

Squeeze the last bit of summer fun and sample al fresco eats with jerk dishes, seafood, vegan specialties and global music at the first annual Caribbean Jerk, Seafood & Vegan Fest. Scheduled for September 30 through October 1 on the near South Side, the event combines specialty cuisine with a diverse line-up of live music. The weekend will also feature art & craft vendors, dancing and bites for every appetite.
