Chicago Like a Local Blog

Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Frequent travelers know that a little extra room space can make a world of difference at the end of a long day of touring. Likewise, if you're traveling with little ones in tow, you know that designated space for sleeping kids is always a welcome amenity. But it can be difficult to dig through hotel booking sites to find larger, suite-style rooms. Now there's an online booking service that connects travelers with hotel suites and multiple room accommodations: Suiteness

Fieldhouse Jones

Many travelers, young and old, opt to stay in hostels to save money. If you’re used to a more luxurious travel experience, you might be turned off by the idea of a hostel. But Fieldhouse Jones is no ordinary hostel. Located between Chicago’s prime Gold Coast and Old Town neighborhoods, the building is part hostel, part hotel, part Airbnb, and completely unlike any other space in the city.

Sir Richard Branson came to Chicago in a big way and Virgin Hotels Chicago is another delightful reminder of his golden touch. (Quick note: he also appears in the introduction on the TV in each room, so he does make an “appearance” to each guest, in a matter of speaking.) In the past few years, the debut hotel brand has garnered buzz from a variety of outlets. It makes a perfect place to camp out for a brief trip to check out all that Chicago has to offer.

If you’re coming to Chicago from near or far, you may well enjoy the charms of being out and about in River North. It’s right next to the Chicago River (hence its clever name) and you can walk into the Loop or over to Michigan Avenue in just a few minutes. With a raft of lively bars and nightspots, there’s quite a bit to do. I’d recommend a stay at the lovely Kinzie Hotel, as the staff are welcoming and the amenities in the rooms are quite fine.

Chicago is an architecture buff's playground—it's even, some have argued, the best architectural city in America. Stay overnight in the marvelous Alise Chicago Hotel while visiting the city, and you’ll be staying in a masterwork by Daniel Burnham, urban planner famous for his 1909 plan for Chicago, and architect of many great Chicago buildings, including the Columbian Exposition.

The bustle at the Kimpton Hotel Allegro starts as soon as you step off the sidewalk on Randolph Street in the Chicago Theatre District and up the stairs into their lobby. With its Art Deco interior and the welcoming feel you’ll get when checking in, it’s easy to see why so many people make the Hotel Allegro their home-away-from home when visiting Chicago.

Perched right on Ohio Street, the ACME Hotel Company Chicago offers up a lodging experience that is the most rock and roll thing about the bustling neighborhood River North. It’s the perfect headquarters for an entire weekend that might include stops at the nearby Eataly food emporium, the Redhead Piano Bar, and back to the ACME’s own Berkshire Room for a night cap. Explore the ins and outs of ACME Hotel Company, and the restaurants and things to do nearby.

Dana Hotel and Spa Chicago

Amid the hustle and bustle of River North, the Dana Hotel and Spa in Chicago offers a bit of tranquility with its wonderfully appointed rooms and suites. The hotel always offered a bit of nightlife of their own with Vertigo Sky Lounge, which for eight years was their four-season rooftop lounge. Just announced is a new cocktail concept which will take the 26th floor space to even greater heights!

The elegance and beauty of the Palmer House Hilton earns it a spot at the top of luxury hotel lists and it's location in the heart of the Loop makes it a popular pick for business and leisure travelers alike. But beyond the gilded ceilings and prized art works, the hotel represents another kind of treasure—tangible Chicago history.
