Chicago Like a Local Blog

Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Author: Yvette Jaskiewicz

Yvette Jaskiewicz is a staff member at Choose Chicago. Outside of the daily grind, Yvette performs improv and sketch comedy around the city, primarily with the ComedySportz Chicago Professional Ensemble at CSz Theater Chicago. She lives on the north side with her husband and cat and enjoys exploring the city in fun ways, like monthly neighborhood dinner dates. Live, Dream, Laugh, Love — you can do it all in Chicago!

When people hear "dinner theater," they may beg to do anything else. But Chicago is home to some hilarious interactive shows that, yes, feature meals—but more importantly, highlight the fun factor. Eye rolls are replaced with gut-busting laughs, and you won’t want the fun to end. Grab a date or a group of friends for a memorable night at these Chicago shows.

Fantastic Super Great Nation Numero Uno

The Second City's 41st e.t.c. revue — Fantastic Super Great Nation Numero Uno — has a mouthful of a title, paired with a belly full of laughs. The e.t.c. stage, known for its edgier, more Chicago-themed sketch revues, keeps to its reputation, housing two hours of non-stop, goofball, slap-your-thighs laughter with its newest comedy show.

The Illusionists

Hundreds of theatre productions are playing in Chicago for extended runs (hello Hamilton!) and open runs (from Blue Man Group to the many great nightly shows at The Second City), however, some only offer performances for a few days or a few weeks. Here are four highlights of what to see on stage now in Chicago before it's too late!

Chicago Restaurant Week: January 27 – February 9, 2017

The reservation books are now open for the 14-day feast otherwise known as Chicago Restaurant Week. From Friday, January 27, to Thursday, February 9, dine at 300+ restaurants (including 66 new participants!) at deliciously low prices. Multiple-course meals pack in prix fixe deals with $22 brunch (new this year) and lunch options, and $33/$44 dinner options.

First Bites Bash 2016

It's the first foodie celebration of the year, and the date is set for Thursday, January 26, 2017. A new location at Navy Pier, a new celeb chef host and 32 new restaurants are on the lineup for this 1-night only tasting party. Start 2017 off with this stylish celebration of the Chicago culinary scene... and do it with a deal: Early Bird tickets have just been posted.

VAMP

The comedy scene in Chicago is huge. In fact, you can see shows live seven nights a week all over the city. Many of them come and go, but these four Chicago comedy staples always entertain, no matter when—and how often—you drop in for a show.

When you think of beer tours, you typically envision yourself in a brewery, listening to a dude with a dope beard explain the difference between hops and barley. You're vaguely paying attention because your taste buds are going crazy from sipping on a craft brew you typically wouldn't know to order. Now with Chicago Beer Experience Beer Tours, yes — you're learning how beer is made. But — you're also learning about Chicago history and exploring local neighborhoods, beer in hand.
