The Debate Over Chicago's Six Corners

Tuesday, August 26, 2014 12:00 AM by Amanda Scotese

Portage Park Six Corners

For many new Chicagoans, the Six Corners is an intersection in Wicker Park where young transplants go out on the weekends. But for the more established residents of the Windy City, the Six Corners is in Portage Park (above). Both of these are intersections with Milwaukee Avenue along with a north-south street and an east-west street. At that point though, couldn't one could argue that with so many diagonal streets, like Elston, Archer Avenue, and Milwaukee Avenue, that Chicago has lots of "six corners"?

A Trio of Rooftop Bars in River North

Vertigo

What is that fascinates humans about being sipping a cocktail, talking with friends, and looking down at the urban landscape below? It's hard to quantify, but these three rooftop bars are excellent places to capture this feeling before the leaves fall and we must look around for our jackets and other outwear items.

Chicago Jazz Festival

We're certainly not implying that jazz music ever stopped being a staple in Chicago but with two new venues opened in the last year and a half (Constellation in Roscoe Village and The Promontory in Hyde Park) and more jazz series popping up every summer, we are in the middle of a strong resurgence. The city's lifelong love affair with the genre culminates every Labor Day weekend in Millennium Park at the Chicago Jazz Festival.

In Chicago, you can't swing a lunchbox without hitting a sandwich counter. Chicago is filled with sandwiches of all sorts, from local sensations like the Italian beef to international staples and hybrids in between. In honor of National Sandwich Month (hint: August), here's a list of some of the city's most superb sandwiches.

Chicago Gourmet

Fall means many things in Chicago: the rustle of leaves, a focus on fall harvests, and a new crop of college students. It's also time to celebrate the wide and wonderful world of culinary creation that exists at our doorstep and beyond.

We are fortunate to have Bon Appétit presents Chicago Gourmet back again at Millennium Park for the seventh year and this fine fete stretches gloriously from September 27-28.

Beer Brewing

Come to Union Station this Saturday August 23rd for the Bacon, Beer & Sports Celebration. Need I say more? Seriously, do I?

Although chances are most readers just cleared their Saturday schedules and closed out of this window, I'll go on to explain a little more about Bacon, Beer, & Sports for those of you who are still with me.

Chicago Dancing Festival

Chicago, we may be in the dog days of summer, but don't let that you miss out on some really special events this weekend. Food, drinks and live entertainment abound. Get your culture on with the Chicago Dancing Festival, or get rowdy at the Bacon, Sports & Beer Celebration. The choice, as always, is entirely yours.

Jangleheart Circus Show Recommendations

Thursday, August 21, 2014 12:00 AM by Kiley Peters

Jangleheart

This weekend Jangleheart Circus takes over The Den Theatre for the second time with over 80 shows scheduled. The team from Upstairs Gallery has put together a knock-out festival and every show looks amazing. I pulled out a few shows I'm recommending below, but I know I'm leaving out a number of must-sees. Take these recommendations as you may, but definitely go to this festival -- a ton of great shows.
