James Beard Awards Chicago Events: Three Dots and a Dash Tiki Takeover

On Monday, May 1, Chicago will be hosting the 2017 James Beard Awards at the iconic Lyric Opera House. A whopping ten Chicago restaurants will be among the nominees for what many consider the Oscars of the culinary world. While you can always buy tickets and attend the James Beard Awards and Gala, here are eight fantastic awards week events, all open to the public, that promise an up-close, personal and tasty look into the culinary stars of the James Beard Awards in Chicago.

Fieldhouse Jones

Many travelers, young and old, opt to stay in hostels to save money. If you’re used to a more luxurious travel experience, you might be turned off by the idea of a hostel. But Fieldhouse Jones is no ordinary hostel. Located between Chicago’s prime Gold Coast and Old Town neighborhoods, the building is part hostel, part hotel, part Airbnb, and completely unlike any other space in the city.

A trip to Navy Pier always promises a day of fun, but this spring, visitors to Chicago's top family travel destination will be invited to seesaw into the season... literally! Impulse, an internationally acclaimed, interactive public-art installation of 15 musical and illuminated seesaws in Polk Bros Park, invites both little kids and kids at heart to bounce to musical beats and beams of light at this musical playground.

Sir Richard Branson came to Chicago in a big way and Virgin Hotels Chicago is another delightful reminder of his golden touch. (Quick note: he also appears in the introduction on the TV in each room, so he does make an “appearance” to each guest, in a matter of speaking.) In the past few years, the debut hotel brand has garnered buzz from a variety of outlets. It makes a perfect place to camp out for a brief trip to check out all that Chicago has to offer.

Odysseo by Cavalia

Big top tents usually present shows with the expected formula of animal tricks, high-wire acts and prancing and plumed dancers. Well, Cavalia's new multidimensional extravaganza Odysseo kicks all of that tired spectacle right to the curb. A showcase of graceful horses, live music, acrobats, dancers and aerialists, this show lives up to the claim "the best show ever."

Exhibitionism — The Rolling Stones

From guided walking or bike tours (with a discount) to the grand opening of Exhibitionism - The Rolling Stones at Navy Pier, to cruising with the Easter bunny, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Chicago Steakhouses Pay Homage to James Beard

Wednesday, April 12, 2017 12:00 AM by Matt Kirouac

With the James Beard Foundation Awards set to take place in Chicago May 1, preceded by Eats Week, there’s no better time to eat your way around town at a number of restaurants paying homage to James Beard himself. Chicago being a city renowned for its world-class steakhouses, both old and new, there’s perhaps no better way to celebrate Eats Week than with a visit to one of these beefy bastions.
