Chicago Like a Local Blog

Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Posts from March 2017

The colorful Ravenswood corridor in Lincoln Square hugs the Metra right-of-away as it makes its way north through a clutch of North Side Chicago neighborhoods. Many of the former industrial buildings along this street now house a range of booming businesses (including craft breweries!), and spending an afternoon in these parts is quite pleasant. Why not take a short trip and visit a few of our favorite Ravenswood gems. Let's get started!

Old Town is one of Chicago’s most historic neighborhoods, located on the North Side. It’s home to St. Michael’s Church, one of only seven buildings that survived the Great Chicago Fire. In more recent times, the neighborhood has become a popular spot for locals and tourists to enjoy great food, shopping and more. Read on for a full day’s itinerary of budget-friendly eats, fun things to do, and new spots to check out in Chicago's Old Town.

Fantastic Super Great Nation Numero Uno

The Second City's 41st e.t.c. revue — Fantastic Super Great Nation Numero Uno — has a mouthful of a title, paired with a belly full of laughs. The e.t.c. stage, known for its edgier, more Chicago-themed sketch revues, keeps to its reputation, housing two hours of non-stop, goofball, slap-your-thighs laughter with its newest comedy show.

The weekend is here and it's nothing short of a great time. Have you created your NCAA March Madness bracket?? We're sure you have. Now get ready to watch all the action at one of the many Chicago restaurants and bars offering promotions for the tournament. Not only that, we've got heated outdoor (!) domes at City Winery Riverwalk, more St. Patrick's Day events, art and dance showcases and much more. It's time to make weekend plans with our Chicago guide.

Chicago is an architecture buff's playground—it's even, some have argued, the best architectural city in America. Stay overnight in the marvelous Alise Chicago Hotel while visiting the city, and you’ll be staying in a masterwork by Daniel Burnham, urban planner famous for his 1909 plan for Chicago, and architect of many great Chicago buildings, including the Columbian Exposition.

Black Bean Fideos

Ah, soup . . . that warm, savory soul balm that makes cold and blustery (or just plain difficult) days a little bit more bearable. When a warmed-up can of potage just isn’t good enough, Chicago eateries come through with some tastes-like-homemade options that will have you checking the kitchen to make sure your grandma is not in there stirring pots. Hungry now? Well, here are five tasty, hearty soups that are oh-so-worth trying.

With St. Patrick's Day approaching, we're kicking things off this weekend with some amazing events to celebrate! Not only are there must-see Chicago St. Patrick's Day events with Chicago Riverwalk festivities like the parade & river dye, but Navy Pier opens a new public activated light and sound experience that will have you pulling your cameras out. Don't forget to tag #mychicagopix. Create your Chicago weekend itinerary with our guide!

It’s almost St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago, and that means there are lots of fun (and mostly FREE) events in the city. Bookmark this list to make sure that you don’t miss out on any of these St. Patrick's Day holiday happenings starting tomorrow March 11 and throughout the weekend!
