Chicago Like a Local Blog

Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Posts from March 2016

The Last DefenderYou may have heard of those experiences in Chicago where you get locked in a room with people and you have to find your way out in an hour. You may be thinking "Umm... locked in a room with people I DON'T KNOW for an hour and I can't get out? No thanks. Biyeeee!" I get it, especially if they're scary ones with zombies, or you're with someone who is just the worst. However, The House Theatre of Chicago has come up with such a cool and unique escape-type room experience that I think even the biggest doubters will have a blast.

T.rex at The Field Museum Chicago

Have you ever wanted to snooze with Sue the T.rex? Explore a museum... by flashlight? Sleep with the fishes — literally? So many of our beloved Chicago institutions offer overnights for families, making for an exciting alternative to the usual tourist hotel and an exciting city adventure like no other. Here are three amazing, upcoming opportunities to spend the night at a museum (or aquarium!).

Chicago Flower and Garden Show

You might know Chicago as the "Windy City" or the "City of Broad Shoulders", but one of our city's most appropriate nicknames is the "Garden City." Indeed our city's seal states clearly Urbs in Horto, Latin for city in a garden. As springtime rolls around, the reason for this flowery nickname is evident: everywhere you turn, you'll see gardens big and small, in our backyards, on our parkways, even on our balconies and rooftops! Here are four gardens and flower shows where you'll find some of the best spring blooms in Chicago.

Taste of Iceland at Cite Restaurant

While Chicago and Iceland may be far apart, a special series taking place next week is about to bridge the gap in delicious new ways. Taking place March 17 through March 20, Taste of Iceland is a food festival like no other, showcasing the country's cuisine at legendary Cité Restaurant via a special tasting menu.

C2E2 Chicago Comic and Entertainment ConventionSince 2010, C2E2 is an annual comic book and pop culture convention that takes place in Chicago. This year, it takes place March 18-20 at McCormick Place's South Building. With featured partners like Marvel, DC comics, Revolution Beer, and twitch, you know you can expect a great time.

This three-day event has an action-packed schedule of exhibitors, panels, autograph sessions, and of course... people watching.

There is perhaps no more welcoming place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Chicago than the Irish American Heritage Center on the city’s Northwest Side. Of course, you’d do well to check out many of their other programs and exhibitions, but let’s start by talking about what’s going on there this year for St. Patrick’s Day.

Chicago Flamenco Festival

Chicago weather is finally warming up and the firery rhythms of the last weekend of the Chicago Flamenco Festival is an exciting way to indulge in the heat. Explore the expansive culture of flameno dancing with a concert, Colores del Alma this Friday and Saturday at the Insituto Cervantes.

St. Patrick's Day isn't just a drinking holiday. On the contrary, it's one of the best food holidays of the year, with restaurants, bars, and bakeries celebrating Irish heritage through a miscellany of unique specials. This year, the variety taking shape throughout Chicago includes everything from gourmet riffs on Shamrock Shakes to Guinness pizzas.
