Chicago Like a Local Blog

Unique perspectives on the city from the people who live here.

Posts from January 2015

Each week, we feature one Instagram photographer who will get to feature their photos and videos on Choose Chicago's Instagram account all week long, part of our new #TakingOverChooseChicago series. This week, we chose Molly Josephine. Enjoy!

Frontier

Food and liquor go together like Mike Ditka and facial hair, but it's not as easy as slapping together a plate of food with a random boozy beverage. It takes a special artistry and precision to make a masterful pairing, and when done right it can really make a memorable meal. There are plenty of places in Chicago who have got pairing down to a science, many of which are participating in Chicago Restaurant Week.

Drinking Up the Chicago Flag: Star 1

Whether you’re a born and bred Chicagoan or a transplant who has embraced this great city as your home, one thing connects us all: our flag.

This iconic symbol of our city has been displayed in public and private spaces in its current form since 1939; a version of it was first approved in 1917. It’s seen in places you would imagine and in places you might think unimaginable. Journalist Elliott Ramos reported on the symbolic importance of the flag for WBEZ; author Robert Loerzel wrote a piece for Chicago Magazine about how our flag — and our undying love for it — compares (or doesn’t) to other cities.

Weekend Alert: January 30-February 1

Chicago Restaurant Week

Good times this weekend, very good times. Whether you're checking out a very unique new show in "The Adventures of Tapman,"a dazzling production on ice of "Frozen," admiring purebred dogs at the International Kennel Club Dog Show, or digging in to some delicious food in the return of Chicago Restaurant Week 2015 (!!), you've got things to smile about.

Kids hotel

Chicago's luxury hotels don't just tolerate pint-sized guests, they welcome them with open arms, extending unforgettable perks that make kids feel like stars. From special spa treats to an ice cream cart that visits your guest room, here are three Chicago hotels that go the extra mile to make sure kids are happy during their stay.

Hotel Palomar

Perhaps you've never been to the River North area of Chicago. Some call it RiNo (pronounced like the sizable animal) and this linguistic reduction is just another way to move more quickly to a description of the area's steakhouses, lounges and other pastimes.

If you've never been, you might want to plan for a night over at the Hotel Palomar. Of course, if you have frequented the area before this is also the perfect time to spend the night, slow things down and enjoy all they have to offer.

Randolph Street Market

This past weekend, my daughter and I spent some time at the Randolph Street Market Festival. We had such fun exploring three floors worth of art, fashion, vintage treasures, decorators finds and more. Even the venue itself - the beaux arts Plumbers Hall at 1340 W. Washington - was interesting (check out the mural of Buckingham Fountain on the staircase and the ornate detailing and woodwork and don't forget to stroll the balcony overlooking the auditorium - there are treasures to be found up there, too).

Chicago Loses an Icon: RIP 'Mr. Cub' Ernie Banks

Ernie Banks dine like a local

On Jan. 23, Chicago lost one of its finest.

Ernie Banks passed away late on a Friday night, with news breaking around 9 p.m. local. The news exploded on social media and overwhelmed the sports conversation on a night that saw the NHL host their annual All-Star Game fantasy draft and an NBA player - Klay Thompson - break a league scoring record.

That's because people respected Mr. Cub.
