The BRAIN-ART Initiative exhibit was organized and sponsored by artist and neuroscientist Audrius Plioplys as a way for artists nationwide to show their support for the BRAIN Initiative (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies), a U.S. program providing an additional $100 million for brain research across the U.S. Announced by President Obama last year, the funding to research laboratories has already begun. "How does our mind work? How do 100 billion cells, neurons, produce thought, awareness, and consciousness? How does their activity result in us and our society? These questions have been central ones in my work, both artistic and neuroscientific, for over 35 years. With all other neuroscientists I applaud President Obama's BRAIN Initiative. However, it is not just scientists who can shed light on how our minds work-artists can also. This exhibit is an attempt to show just that," says Plioplys. He added that he can envision a second phase to the BRAIN-ART Initiative, just as the BRAIN Initiative is slated for expansion over the next several years.
