Activity in and around McCormick Place is buzzing, and major developments are on the horizon.

New Entertainment District

The Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) announced plans for the McCormick Place Entertainment District in May 2013. The plan includes many different developments that will take place over the course of the next couple years.

  • Events Center: A 10,000-seat arena, designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli, will host general sessions for large conventions and trade shows, as well as DePaul University basketball games. It will also serve as a venue for concerts and other special events. The arena is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2016.
  • Marriott Marquis hotel: The new 1,200-room headquarters hotel will be located next to McCormick Place. It will provide facilities and amenities to serve groups holding shows at the convention center. It will be connected to the West Building by a sky bridge, and the entrance will be on South Michigan Avenue in the historic Motor Row District.
  • Mid-market boutique hotel: The plan also calls for a smaller, 500-room hotel that will be developed adjacent to the events center. This will boost the total number of new guest rooms in the area to 1,700.
  • Dining and entertainment: The district will welcome modern restaurants and retail shops to be woven in with the historic character of the old neighborhood. These will serve as entertainment for convention-goers and event attendees, as well as residents in the South Loop

Improved Access to Public Transportation

A brand new Green Line ‘L' station that will soon serve the new entertainment district and McCormick Place, as well as residents of the South Loop.  The station will be located near the intersection of Cermak and State, and will have three entrances, bike racks, elevators and direct access to the arena and convention center. Construction has already started and is scheduled for completetion in late 2014.

Continuing the Green Movement

In 2013, McCormick Place planted a new rooftop garden to provide fresh produce for the convention center's caterers. Currently, the garden spans half an acre, but there are plans to expand it to the full three acres the roof covers.
