HOWELLS & HOOD

Opened: March 2013

Vibe: Loud, boisterous beer paradise with a big city feel and a sporty slant

Sample dish: The "Lobster Shortcake" composed of Maine lobster, bell peppers, corn, tomatoes, red onions and spicy sherry cream within a Fair Oaks Farms aged cheddar and green onion biscuit

Plus: The prominent address is at the base of iconic Tribune Tower and the restaurant's name pays homage to building architects John Howells and Raymond Hood

 


SIENA TAVERN

Opened: February 2013

Vibe: A sexy chic urban tavern makes a splash with its well-heeled, high energy crowds

Sample dish: Housemade gnocchi with truffle cream, fried sage and crispy pancetta

Plus: You might spy the native Italian and charming Top Chef alum Fabio Viviani whose family recipes are behind the menu

 


RICKSHAW REPUBLIC

Opened: February 2013

Vibe: Colorful and casual neighborhood spot with a strong sense of family hospitality greeting you at the door  

Sample dish: The "Beef Rendang" with tender chunks of Angus beef braised in a rich sauce of coconut cream and aromatic spices served with steamed rice

Plus: In addition to being Chicago's newest and only Indonesian restaurant (though there is a local catering company that hosts pop-up dinners), it's BYOB 

 


LITTLE MARKET BRASSERIE

Opened: January 2013

Vibe: Sleek subway tiles and cozy lighting create a classy bistro setting fit for quiet conversation and lively small group gatherings

Sample dish: Braised short rib poutine topped with cognac gravy and crispy fried cheese curds

Plus: It has a great pedigree, with Chef Ryan Poli (of popular Spanish tapas lounge Tavernita) handling the menu and creative cocktail wizards the Tippling Bros. overseeing a beverage program that features mix-and-match "charged sodas"

 


SUSHI DOKKU

Opened: January 2013

Vibe: A subtle soundtrack and minimalist décor is decidedly un-flashy and the small space is filled with locals doing casual date nights and low-key outings

Sample dish: "Hot Daisy" maki roll with albacore tuna, masago, spicy mayonaise and fresh cucumber slices wrapped in soy paper

Plus: A selection of sake cocktails plays up the solid sake menu while the drinks menu is rounded out by Japanese beers and whiskies

 


LITTLE GOAT DINER

Opened: December 2012

Vibe:  Laid back cool with a sunny disposition that's very approachable, hence the mixed crowd that it draws ranging from chef groupies, young families, late night revelers, hip couples and visiting tourists

Sample dish: "Kimchee & Bacon & Eggs & Pancakes Asian Style Breakfast Tasty Thing"

Plus: Chef Stephanie Izard of Top Chef fame designed the space to be multi-functional with a bakery, coffee shop, private party area, rooftop and "classroom" cooking kitchen
