MAYOR RAHM EMANUEL AND CHOOSE CHICAGO ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF THE NEW CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD WEBSITE, DESIGNED TO BRING TOURISM DIRECTLY INTO CHICAGO’S NEIGHBORHOODS

Chicago Neighborhood Website Enables Visitors to Explore the Attractions, Entertainment, Shopping, and Restaurants in 51 Chicago Neighborhoods

Today, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Don Welsh, President and CEO of Choose Chicago, announced the launch of the new Chicago Neighborhood website. Located at www.choosechicago.com/neighborhoods-and-communities/ visitors and residents can explore 51 of Chicago’s neighborhoods thematically and geographically. Users of the site are able to create an itinerary for a particular neighborhood and gear it to their interests. The site includes an events calendar and enables users to find dining options, entertainment, and activities throughout the City of Chicago.

“The neighborhoods are the jewels of the city, and the City of Chicago enthusiastically welcomes visitors to our diverse and culturally eclectic neighborhoods. From places to dine to arts and culture to music to enjoying Chicago’s green space, Chicago has it all,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “I encourage visitors and residents to explore and use the newly launched Chicago Neighborhood Website to learn about the many things to do in our many great Chicago neighborhoods.”

Chicago has more than 77 community areas made up of more than 120 neighborhoods that offer endless options for entertainment, activities, and cultural experiences.  With almost 600 parks, multiple beaches, thousands of restaurants, two dozen farmers markets in 18 different neighborhoods, a variety of museums, six major professional sports teams, great shopping, and a growing music scene, Chicago provides many options for active Chicagoans and visitors alike.

“Choose Chicago continues to thoughtfully craft a cultural tourism strategy for Chicago,” said Don Welsh. “Expanding access to and knowledge of the variety of activities that Chicago has to offer will encourage visitors to return to Chicago and extend their stays so that they can explore the many parts of our vibrant city.”

The site has a highly visual and interactive map of Chicago neighborhoods allowing users to explore each neighborhood’s listings of restaurants, shops, cultural attractions, public art, historic sites and more. The site offers a breakdown of neighborhoods with neighborhood descriptions and listings of current events in each neighborhood. With the garnered support of many community partners, the Chicago Neighborhood Website brings the neighborhood experience to the forefront and opens many parts of the city to be explored and visited.

“Our Chicago neighborhoods provide a huge opportunity to further expand the Cultural Plan for the city and to share the thriving cultural diversity we are so fortunate to have here in Chicago,” said Michelle Boone Commissioner of the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. “These neighborhoods are a cultural asset that set us apart from other cultural destinations and create a significant opportunity for cultural tourism.”

The new Chicago Neighborhood Website focuses on expanding tourism throughout the city and offers the opportunity for both visitors and residents to experience many landscapes and cultures all within one city. The site will continue to facilitate Mayor Emanuel’s goal to welcome 50 million visitors annually and for the City of Chicago to be among the top 5 US cities for international visitation by 2020.

"As the Alderman of one of the most diverse wards in the city, encompassing Chinatown, Pilsen, Little Italy, and now parts of the West Loop and South Loop, I am very excited for the launch of the Chicago Neighborhood Website,” said Alderman Daniel Solis, 25th Ward.  “This is the best, most diverse city and I am so proud that we have a new way to share the wonderful assets of our great city. I hope that this will encourage visitors and residents to explore areas of the city they've never gotten to know before and continue to learn about the wonderful culture in this town."
