Global Spotlight

Choose Chicago has sales and media relations staff in each of our eight international offices. Sales staffers provide direct sales contact and marketing resources to in-country tour operators and travel agents. Our media relations teams generate media opportunities that create consumer awareness and demand for Chicago as a leisure travel destination. This synergistic effort is already creating significant results for Chicago. The international office teams make on-going sales calls on the travel trade, coordinate trade show activities, identify top-tier tour operators and media for visits to Chicago.

In September, Chicago was represented at the JATA Travel Forum in Tokyo, Japan. This is Japan's largest trade show for the travel industry and Choose Chicago participated in face-to-face meetings with tour operators, travel agents, media, and consumers during the four day event. The Chicago booth was part of Brand USA's Discover America Pavilion, which grew significantly in size over previous years. In addition to the business meetings at the show, Chicago representatives, including Managing Director of Leisure Sales and Tourism John Curran, met with key partners including the US Embassy and major airlines to foster new relations for travel between Japan and Chicago.

In October, Choose Chicago's tourism sales and public relations teams, including Managing Director of Leisure Sales and Tourism, John Curran; Assistant Director of Leisure Sales, Bill Schmitt; Manager of International Public Relations, Kara Carmichael; and Director of Sales for the Fairmont Hotel, Dan Dolan, led a sales mission to Mexico City. This highly successful visit included a trade reception prior to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's inaugural performance at the historic Palacio de Bellas Artes. Special destination training with airline partners and Mexico's largest tour operators were very successful. The Chicago team also did many face-to-face meetings with media and travel trade professionals to develop new products for Mexican visitors to Chicago.

This past month, Choose Chicago has hosted FAM tours with key tour operators and travel trade representatives from the United Kingdom, Mexico, Canada, and Belgium. Providing select travel influencers a guided program to experience first-hand the breadth of Chicago's offerings remains a critical marketing focus.

Our public relations team is proud to have placed Chicago as a destination in several highly circulated publications. Of particular note are pieces that placed in the October issue of Highlife (the featured in-flight magazine aboard British Airways) and a print story that ran in the U.K.'s Daily Mail, which has a printed circulation of nearly 2,000,000.
