ELK NATIONAL VETERANS MEMORIAL REOPENS

The Elk National Veterans Memorial, located in Lincoln Park at the intersection of Diversey Pkwy. And Sheridan Rd., recently underwent some repairs to the stone soffit that encircles the exterior. The updates took about eight months to complete, and were finalized in June 2013. The building, which has been closed since 2010 for safety reasons, reopened to the public in April. The memorial no longer offers guided tours, but a staff member can give one with approval. Groups can take self guided tours of the rotunda and all the immaculate art inside the building. The memorial is open April 15-November 15, Mon.-Sat. from noon-4pm.

IRON CHEF MORIMOTO TEAMS WITH JAPONAIS

Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto has partnered with the group behind Japonais to open a new restaurant, Japonais by Morimoto, in early 2014. The original Japonais, locating on the North Branch of the Chicago River, will remain open until the end of the year, owner Rick Wahlstedt said. It will then close to undergo a major remodel and open again midwinter. Part of the redesign will include adding a sushi bar, opening the kitchen to let diners peek inside while the chefs prepare dishes and installing two private rooms to hold 15 people in each. There will also be a small first-level bar specializing in Japanese vodka and whiskey and Morimoto's line of sakes.

CH DISTILLERY OPENS IN WEST LOOP

The culinary powerhouse that is the West Loop welcomed its newest resident on August 20, but this one is a little different. CH Distillery (564 W. Randolph St.) focuses on vodka – but also has two gins – and uses Illinois grains to make its spirits on site. The distillery features a cocktail bar that serves cold vodka shots, with rye bread and pickles, plus cocktails made with gins by Blackbird bartender Kyle Davidson. There is also a menu of small plates that changes frequently. Tours of the distillery will be available soon.
