CHICAGO RANKS NO. 3 AMONG TOP U.S. CITIES

Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards revealed the top 10 cities in the U.S., ranking Chicago third.

Chicago's stand-out elements, according to readers, included restaurants (90.0), culture/sites (87.3) and shopping (86.3).

The "terrific architecture" and "great ethnic food" help make Chicago a must-see city, landing it a place on our list. The restaurants, skyscrapers, museums, waterfront and more make Chicago a "perfect city for solo, friend, family, or romantic getaways."

PREVIEW THE MAJOR UPGRADES AT O'HARE'S INTERNATIONAL TERMINAL



The International Terminal at O'Hare will undergo a substantial transformation, adding 15 new dining and retail brands, as well as new passenger amenities.

Among other establishments, this will include:
  • A pass-through duty-free store with luxury shops from Bvlgari, Michael Kors, Salvatore Ferragamo and Emporio Armani
  • XpresSpa, providing massages, manicures, pedicures and facials
  • A food court with performance kitchens
  • Four concepts from restaurant Chicago-based group Lettuce Entertain You: Hub 51 (sushi, tacos, burgers and more), Urban Olive (Mediterranean), Big Bowl (Chinese and Thai) and Wow Bao (hot Asian buns)
  • Mexican restaurant Tortas Frontera, by award-winning chef Rick Bayless
  • Rustic Italian restaurant Tocco
  • Gastropub Local Headlines Bar
  • Locally owned and operated Intelligentsia Coffee
  • Chicago-based Vosges Haut Chocolat

The upgrades will be completed by the fall of 2013.

NEW: GODFREY HOTEL TO OPEN IN RIVER NORTH

Chicago's vibrant River North neighborhood will welcome a new hotel next summer. The 16-story, 221-room Godfrey Hotel will open at 127 W. Huron St., showcasing unique cube-inspired architecture.

Amenities: A chef-driven restaurant and lobby bar, a spa, 24-hour fitness center, two floors of parking, free Wi-Fi.

O'HARE TO GET NEWER, FASTER BODY SCANNERS THAT ALLEVIATE PRIVACY CONCERNS

By January, O'Hare will have 29 new body scanners that will replace all 23 of the older scanners that the airport has been using since 2010.

These new scanners will display a generic outline of each passenger rather than specific body images that have created privacy concerns among some passengers. "Automated target recognition" software will then detect possible threats — any unusual object will then be highlighted by an orange square on the screen.

O'Hare's new scanners can screen a person in as fast as 10 seconds, which should also speed up security lines.
