On September 26, college football fans from across the nation will gather in Chicago for the 18th annual Chicago Football Classic. Soldier Field stadium hosts the event, which pits the Morgan State University Bears against the Howard University Bison.

Every year, the matchup between two top Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) teams gathers friends, family and alumni for a weekend of events, and this year is no exception. A downtown pep rally kicks things off, tailgating warms up the crowd, and the two battle of the bands puts on a musical showcase before the game and at halftime.

Tickets are available for purchase at select area locations, partipating Walgreens and online through Ticketmaster. Tickets prices range from $17, $25, $35 and $45, with suites also available. Add some Chicago sightseeing to your sports-filled itinerary with this roundup of top 10 weekend highlights happening across the city:

Museums & Exhibits

  • The Freedom Principle: Experiments in Art & Music, 1965 to Now
Museum of Contemporary Art, July 11 - November 22
This exhibition showcases the multifaceted world of the black avant-garde in Chicago during the 1960s alongside a selection of contemporary artists' interpretations of this heritage. It is occasioned in part by the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a still-flourishing organization of Chicago musicians whose interdisciplinary explorations expanded the boundaries of jazz.
  • Deana Lawson: Ruttenberg Contemporary Photography Series
Art Institute of Chicago, September 5 - January 10
For nearly a decade, New York-based photographer Lawson has been investigating the visual expression of global black culture and how individuals claim their identities within it. Her staged portraits, carefully composed scenes, and found images speak to the ways in which personal and social histories, familial legacies, sexuality, social status, and religious-spiritual ideas may be drawn upon the body.
  • Making Place: The Architecture of David Adjaye
Art Institute of Chicago, September 19 - January 3
With over 50 built projects across the world, David Adjaye is rapidly emerging as a major figure in architecture and design. Like many international architects, his practices defy cultural borders and geopolitical categories. However, Adjaye is unique in being an African-born architect working in a global landscape. A proponent for architecture from beyond the Western canon, he brings a distinctive contemporary "Afropolitan" view to his various projects. The first comprehensive museum survey devoted to Adjaye, this exhibition offers an in-depth overview of his distinct approach and visual language.
  • Freedom, Resistance, and the Journey Towards Equality
DuSable Museum of African American History
"FREEDOM & RESISTANCE" is dedicated to the thousands of unknown lives given in the name of freedom and equality. Take a journey through the African American experience addressing several key periods throughout history, beginning at the apex of the Transatlantic Slave Trade; Reconstruction; the Great Migration; the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement; the achievements and setbacks of the 1980s-90s before ending at the dawn of the 21st Century as the country elected its first African American President.
