What does the Choose Chicago's Public Policy Department do?
- Oversees Choose Chicago's relations with the local, state and federal levels of government
- Develops policy solutions and a civic consensus to meet Choose Chicago's goals
- Develops external coalitions and political support for Choose Chicago's agenda
- Communicates Choose Chicago's mission, successes and needs to key civic stakeholders
The Public Policy Department has generated many major accomplishments in the past few years. These successes include the historic labor reforms implemented at McCormick Place that ultimately made the convention center competitive again. It has increased state and local funding for Choose Chicago and facilitated the merger between what was previously the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau and the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture. The Public Policy Department also worked hard with others across the country to enact the Travel Promotion Act which helped to launch Brand USA's International Travel Program and continue to work for visa waiver reforms.
Tourism creates jobs and services while generating new payroll, diversifying our economy, enhancing our local infrastructure and helping to attract new businesses. This team may have been somewhat quiet in the past but in the coming months their visibility, like that of Choose Chicago, will expand. You will begin to see regular updates from the Public Policy Department as they elevate efforts to increase the impactful presence in the tourism industry.
