BALLET IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Every major city seems to have a great dance troupe. Chicago has at some of the nation's finest.

Not just white tights with tutus, the Joffrey Ballet will thrill you with its mixture of classical ballet and exciting new work the world has never seen. In fact, the Joffrey was the first company to bring acid rock to ballet. It was also the first American dance company invited to perform in the former Soviet Union. Yes, the dancers are that good.

For dance with a twist (pun intended), check out Hubbard Street Dance Company. The choreographers combine ballet, modern and jazz dance together with a pulsating excitement that's unmatched elsewhere. This is the cutting-edge of contemporary dance.

Another place that keeps dance so much in the forefront for Chicago is The Harris Theater for Music and Dance. It was formed to provide several small Chicago dance companies an adequate space for practice and performance.

Located at the north end of Millennium Park, the Harris offers one of the most versatile arts programs of anywhere in the country. Jazz, Baroque, dance, soul, folk, Spanish, Serbian, classical...the entertainment categories go on and on. Eclectic isn't a strong enough word for the variety that awaits you at the Harris

Chicago has become a modern dance mecca, with companies like AXIS Dance, Alvin Ailey and the American Ballet Theatre making regular return performances every year.
