Shore Things

Life's a beach in Chicago. Along 26 miles of open lakefront – a favorite path for walking, jogging, biking, and rollerblading – are no less than 31 beaches, including 15 with broad, sandy expanses perfect for volleyball, exploring, or simply enjoying your day in the sun.

Staying downtown? Off Lake Shore Drive between 1200 south and 1600 north are four beaches – Northerly Island/12th Street, Ohio Street, Oak Street, and North Avenue – within walking distance or easy public transportation of most hotels. And many more of these easily accessible waterfront playgrounds are located north and south of the heart of the city.

At North Avenue Beach, one of the most popular downtown beaches, a sleek ocean liner-inspired beach house features an outdoor eatery, concession stands, outdoor showers, equipment (bike, chair, and volleyball) rental, and magnificent views from the upper deck and portholes. Oak Street Beach has a rep for great people-watching. And there are designated areas at Belmont Harbor and Montrose Beach, both on the north side, for dogs to splash and play. See the complete list of beaches and their locations and amenities.

Beaches are open every day through September 6, and lifeguards are on duty from 11 AM until 7 PM (with earlier hours at some sites). Use this Lakefront Webcam to check current conditions before you go.
